Introduction

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal as well as its largest city with approx. 505 526 inhabitants. It covers an area of 100.05 km². It is a coastal city with a couple of hills and has an ocean side.

It is an amazing city to visit if you like old architecture, Azulejos, ancient monuments and church. The city has a really old city center with a Sao Gorge castle in its center but also offers amazing walk and evening in Bairro Alto.

It’s the perfect place to spend 3 to 4 days and discover Portugal rich culture.

Mapping the day in Lisbon

Getting there

The easiest way to get to Liston is to fly there. The airport is located 7km out of the city and offers international flight. From there you can directly ride on the metro to downtown Lisbon in 20min.

Moving Around

The best way to move around Lisbon is by metro. With it 56 stations and 44.5km of rail, it will get you in any of the interesting spot.

Old trams are also running through the old city center. The famous one is the tram 28.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Lisbon is from March to June or September to October when the weather is still warm, hotel rate going down and the crowd less. The high season is during the summer holidays of July/August.

The must to try food in Lisbon are:

  • Pastel de Nata: Egg tart pastry dusted with cinnamon
  • Sardines

Things to do in Lisbon

Alfama district

The oldest district of Lisbon is a maze of delightful narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses. Spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river.

Tram 28

The most famous tram ride of Lisbon that passes through he popular tourist districts of Graca, Alfama, Baixa and Estrela.

Tips: The tram 28 is often crowded, do take another line with an old tram. It will be the same experience with no crowd!

St George’s Castle (Castelo de S. Jorge)

First fortification built in the 1st-century; the Sao Jorge castle played an important role through Lisbon’s history.

Praça do Comércio

Is the most famous squares of Lisbon. It reflected the wealth and ambitions of Portugal during the late 18th century. It was here that captains and merchants would plan sea-voyages and trade their goods

Lisbon Cathedral

Also call the Sé, is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the oldest church in the city as well as the seat of the Patriarchate of Lisbon.

Church of São Vicente of Fora

17th-century church and monastery is one of the main religious monument of the Portugal.

Parque Eduardo VII

Public park of Lisbon worth visiting once you walked up all the Avenida da Liberdade. The park is one of the main green area of the city.

The Champs Elysée of Lisbon. Avenida da Liberdade is famous as one of the most expensive shopping streets in Europe. In its center a pedestrian way goes all the way up.

Aqueduto das Águas Livres

Explore an 18th-century Portuguese Aqueduct.  The main course of the aqueduct covers 18 km, but the whole network of canals extends through nearly 58 km.

Bairro Alto

Bohemian district of Central Lisbon with old cobbled streets and funicilars. Lots of the centuries-old houses are decorated with street arts. At night, a diverse crowd fill the hip, quirky bars, while the sound of Fado music is heard from traditional restaurants.

Old Funicular/ Elevador da Bica

Also know as Elevator are common around the old city center of Lisbon. One of the most famous one the Elevator de Bica.

Santa Justa Lift

The elevator located in the old city connects the lower streets of the Baixa with the higher Largo do Carmo. It

Basílica da Estrela

Also called the Estrela Basilica or the Royal Basilica and Convent of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, is a minor basilica and ancient carmelite convent with beautiful Baroque Neoclassical architecture.

Monumento aos Restauradores

The Monument to the Restorers memorializes the victory of the Portuguese Restoration War, which saw the end of the House of Habsburg and the rise of the House of Braganza, lasted from 1640 to 1668.

Belem Tower

Also known as the Tower of Saint Vincent in the 16th-century is a fortification tower that served as embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers and as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon

Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Visit the old monument from outside, but you can also take an elevator to its viewpoint on top and then access the monster museum on the lower floor!

Jerónimos Monastery

Also called Hieronymites Monastery is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome. The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture.

National Coach Museum

The museum has one of the finest collections of historical carriages in the world and is one of the most visited museums of the city.
