A circle trail called “Alde Gott Panorama-Runde” bring you all around this beautiful German village. You will start with a forest hike along a small waterfall, then try the local snaps from its fountain. Later you will walk through amazing vineyard and grassland with stunning panorama all along.

Sasbachwalden is the perfect trail and place to hike for family, couple, solo traveller and even hardcore hikers. It’s an genuine and really cute part of Germany worth going.

The trek can be done in a single day and if the weather is nice and sunny, it will blast you!

Mapping the day

The Trail of Sasbachwalden

The trail:

  • Duration: 4 to 5h (Officialy 4h, but with a lunch break we took 5h)
  • Ascent & descent: +/- 429m
  • Length: 9.8km approx.
  • Difficulty: Easy

Getting there

The easiest way to get to Sasbachwalden is by car as the small village stands in the middle of the black forest. The biggest town nearby being Strasbourg, Offenburg or Baden-Baden.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Sasbachwalden and its trail is right before the harvest of the grapes in late August. But the trail is open all year round with Spring/Summper being a better choice.

Where to Stay

There are many options on where to stay but it will all depends on where you will be coming from. But if you want to stay in town:

The Trail of Sasbachwalden

Gaishöll Waterfalls

Also known as Gaishöll Wasserfälle in German, is the beginning of the trail of Sasbachwalden. The small waterfalls is created from a river that you follow all the way up. In this first section, you will get most of the ascent of the day.

Snaps fountain

After passing a local hotel/restaurant, you will find a small fountain. The fountain does not supply any snaps but fresh water. But within its basin you will find snaps bottle. Feel free to try and leave a tip if you want to.

Chapel

Right next to the snaps fountain is a little chapel. It is a really cute one in really good conditions

Watermill (Straubenhöfmühle)

After a bit of forest hiking, you will exsit on a road where you will find a little watermill. Pass it and keep on the trail.

Grassland

The next part of the trail will be over grassland filled with apple trees and stunning panorama toward the valley. From now on, the trail will be quite flat.

Vineyard & Viewpoint Münsterblick

And a bit later will start our favourite part of the day, the Vineyards trail. Along it, we even met a local producer. He gave us some grape and tried to explain us something. Unfortunately, he was quite old and only speaking German and we could not understand him.

Get a bit out of the trail of Sasbachwalden and get to the viewpoint for a 360° view.

Sasbachwalden

Once the circle trail done, you could take your car and get down in Sasbachwalden to enjoy some food or a good beer. We personally went at a small bar/restaurant called Ald Saschwalle
