2-Week Sri Lanka Itinerary Day by day

Day 1 – Arrival in Sri Lanka & Stay in Negombo

Your 2 week Sri Lanka itinerary begins with your arrival at Colombo International Airport (Bandaranaike). Once you land, we recommend exchanging money right at the airport—it’s the most convenient and reliable spot to get local currency.

Instead of heading into Colombo, make your way to Negombo, a nearby coastal town just 20 minutes from the airport. It’s not only closer but also perfectly located to begin your Sri Lanka itinerary the next morning without navigating city traffic.

Once you check in and settle at your accommodation, dive into your first Sri Lankan meal—whether it’s dhal curry, vegetable kotu, or egg hoppers, the flavors will set the tone for an unforgettable trip.

Day 2 – Dambulla Cave Temple & Sunset at Pidurangala Rock

After breakfast, it’s time to hit the road and officially kick off your Sri Lanka itinerary. Hop in your driver’s car and head north toward Sigiriya. Along the way, make a cultural stop at one of the country’s most impressive heritage sites: the Dambulla Cave Temple.

This UNESCO-listed complex features five ancient caves, filled with 53 Buddha statues, along with statues of Sri Lankan kings and Hindu gods. The interior is covered in beautiful ceiling frescoes and has a truly peaceful atmosphere. After your visit, don’t miss the short walk over to the striking Golden Temple nearby.

Keep an eye out for mischievous monkeys—they roam freely around the site and are known for trying to snatch snacks or bags!

Once done, continue your journey to Sigiriya. After checking in at your accommodation, hop in a tuk-tuk and ride to Pidurangala Rock for an unforgettable sunset viewpoint. From the top, you’ll get panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and a front-row seat to admire the majestic Lion Rock from a distance.

Wrap up the day with dinner at a local restaurant. There, you can enjoy traditional rice and curry or freshly made kotu before heading back to rest.

Day 3 – Climb Lion Rock & Go on an Elephant Safari

Start your day with a hearty breakfast before catching a tuk-tuk to the iconic Lion Rock, also known as Sigiriya Rock Fortress—a true highlight of any Sri Lanka itinerary.

Begin your visit at the small but informative Sigiriya Museum, where you’ll learn about the rich history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then, hike your way up the massive granite rock that once served as the capital of King Kashyapa (AD 477–495). Along the way, admire the ancient frescoes, the Mirror Wall, and panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and farmlands.

After descending, stop for a relaxed Sri Lankan lunch nearby before returning to your accommodation to rest a bit.

In the afternoon, gear up for an exciting elephant safari in one of the nearby national parks—Kaudulla, Minneriya, or Hurulu Eco Park. A jeep will pick you up directly from your guesthouse. At first, sightings may be slow, but as the heat of the day fades, herds of majestic wild elephants begin to appear near watering holes and open grasslands.

This is one of our favorite days in our Sri Lanka itinerary. End the day with a refreshing shower and head out for dinner at a cozy local spot in Sigiriya.

Day 4 – Sacred Temples & Royal Gardens in Kandy

After breakfast, it’s time to leave Sigiriya and continue your Sri Lanka itinerary with a drive to Kandy, the cultural heart of the country.

On arrival, begin with a visit to one of the most revered Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This beautiful temple houses a tooth of Buddha and is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists around the world.

Once you’ve explored the temple, take a stroll around Kandy Lake, a peaceful oasis in the center of the city. From there, walk over to Kandy City Centre (KCC), a large and modern shopping mall—perfect if you need to stock up on anything or simply want to experience a local urban vibe.

Afterward, head to your accommodation and check in. Take a short rest, then hop in a tuk-tuk and visit the stunning Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya. Known as one of the most beautiful gardens in Sri Lanka, it features thousands of plant species, towering palm avenues, and colorful orchid collections. If you’re lucky, you might even strike up a conversation with local students on a school trip.

Wrap up your day with a cozy homemade dinner at your guesthouse—a warm, local experience that truly adds to your journey. Something we loved in our own Sri Lanka itinerary was all those homemade cooked meals.

Next, enjoy a short break at a roadside viewpoint where you can admire two stunning waterfalls nestled in the hills.

Keep your eyes peeled throughout the drive—this is your best chance to spot some of the country’s most iconic animals. We were lucky to see sloth bears, leopards, elephants, wild buffalo, deer, and a wide variety of birds. Every moment feels like a treasure hunt, and the landscape makes it even more magical.

Around 9:00am, you’ll stop for breakfast on a beach inside the park—a unique and peaceful experience. The setup includes bathrooms and a sink, so you can freshen up before heading back.

Day 10 – Coconut Tree Hill, Turtle Beach & Chill in Mirissa

After a tasty local Sri Lankan breakfast, rent a scooter to kickstart your beach day. A Sri Lanka itinerary wouldn’t be complete without a scooter ride. Your first stop is Coconut Tree Hill, one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in Sri Lanka. This iconic palm-covered viewpoint offers a stunning ocean panorama—go early or late in the day to avoid crowds.

Coconut Tree Beach

From there, walk down to Turtle Beach (also called Dalawella or Wijaya Beach), just below the hill. Make sure to explore both sides of the beach, and if you don’t have snorkeling gear, you can rent it directly on the sand. Don’t forget to ask the locals where to spot turtles—they’re usually happy to help! We spotted two turtles within just five minutes.

After your swim, head back into Mirissa town for lunch. With so many amazing cafés and restaurants, it’s the perfect place to sample something new.

Turtle Beach Mirissa

During the hot afternoon hours, take a break and chill—whether that’s by the beach, your hotel pool, or with a coconut in hand. Later on, visit SPA Ceylon, our favorite place for picking up Ayurvedic souvenirs and skincare products.

Before heading back to your accommodation, take a short ride to nearby Weligama to explore its wide beach and laid-back surf vibe—a nice way to end the day.

Day 11 – Whale Watching & Relaxation in Mirissa

This is that extra day in Mirissa we really wish we had in our Sri Lanka itinerary—one more chance to soak in the beachy vibes and enjoy all that this coastal town has to offer.

In the morning, join a whale watching tour, one of the top things to do in Mirissa and a must-do experience in Sri Lanka. Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to spot blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins, especially during the peak season (November to April). Tours usually start early, around 6:30am, and last a few hours, so pack a light jacket, motion sickness tablets if needed, and your camera!

After the tour, grab a refreshing lunch in town and then take the afternoon to unwind—either by the beach or your hotel pool. This is the perfect time to slow down, enjoy the tropical atmosphere, and reflect on your journey so far.

Day 12 – Parrot Rock, Beach Time & Transfer to Unawatuna with a Galle Fort Visit

Start your morning by heading to Parrot Rock, a large boulder just off the shore of Mirissa Beach. Climb to the top for panoramic ocean views, one of the best way to start a morning in your Sri Lanka itinerary—just be sure to go during low tide for easier access. From there, enjoy a peaceful walk along Mirissa Beach or, if you’re not ready to say goodbye to the turtles, head back to Turtle Beach for one last swim with them.

After a relaxing morning, return to your accommodation, pack up, and maybe take one last dip in the pool. Then, it’s time to say goodbye to Mirissa and hop in a tuk-tuk to Unawatuna.

What to do in Mirissa

On the way, make a stop at one of the turtle hatcheries along the coast. We were pleasantly surprised by the one we visited—it’s a great opportunity to learn more about turtle conservation in Sri Lanka and even see baby turtles up close.

We have read many Sri Lanka itinerary where this wasn’t recommended however, we liked what we saw in the one we visited.

Once in Unawatuna, check into your hotel, rent a scooter, and set off to explore Galle Fort in the late afternoon. This UNESCO-listed fort city is filled with charming colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and seafront views. Day 13 – Unawatuna Beach, Turtle Spotting & Peace Pagoda

Start your day with a morning stroll along Unawatuna Beach (seems like many days of our Sri Lanka itinerary starts with beach walks), one of the longest and most popular beaches in the area. The soft sand and gentle waves make it a perfect way to ease into the day.

After breakfast, head to Turtle Beach (also called Dalawella or Wijaya Beach). Yes—turtle spotting again, because Sri Lanka is just that amazing! What makes this spot special is the natural coral pool that forms along the shore, creating a calm and safe space for swimming—and making it incredibly easy to see resident turtles right from the beach.

Unawatuna Travel Guide

By midday, head back into Unawatuna’s town center and grab lunch at one of its many excellent cafes. In the early afternoon, take a break during the hottest part of the day—whether it’s by your pool or in the shade with a cold drink.

Later, it’s time to visit one of the most unique attractions in the region: the Japanese Peace Pagoda. Perched on a hill between Unawatuna and Galle, this white stupa was built to promote peace and harmony and offers incredible panoramic views of the jungle, ocean, and Galle Fort. It’s a peaceful way to end your day.

Wrap things up by treating yourself to dinner in Unawatuna, and enjoy one of the town’s many flavorful and atmospheric restaurants. Sadly, things are slowly ending in this Sri Lanka Itinerary

Day 14 – Local Beaches, Jungle Escape & Goodbye Sri Lanka

On the last day of your 2-Week Sri Lanka itinerary, start the morning with a short ride to Heenwella Beach, one of the more local and peaceful beaches in Unawatuna. If you’re lucky, you might spot traditional fishermen working by the shore—an authentic glimpse into coastal life.

Just nearby are the Thalpe Natural Pools—rectangular formations carved into the coral reef over 50 years ago. Though man-made, they’ve become one of the more unique things to do in Unawatuna, and they make for a quick and interesting stop.

Heenwella beach

After breakfast, it’s time for your final beach adventure of this Sri Lanka itinerary. Park your scooter and hike a short trail through the jungle to reach the secluded Jungle Beach. Surrounded by lush greenery and calm turquoise waters, it’s the perfect hidden gem to soak in your last few hours by the sea.

Jungle Beach Unawatuna

By noon, head back to Unawatuna’s town center for lunch. And if there’s time, squeeze in one last swim or simply relax in a hammock with a coconut.

In the afternoon, it’s time to say goodbye to paradise as this Sri Lanka itinerary is ending—transfer to Colombo International Airport for your flight home, with your heart full of memories and your camera full of magic.

We hope that you enjoyed our Sri Lanka itinerary.
