Introduction

We loved Lijiang and here is our Lijiang Travel Guide.

Lijiang is a city located in Yunnan province. It is the home of the Naxi people and other minority ethnic group (most Chinese are Han people). The city is 20 557km² big and house 1.25 million people.

The old town is famous for its cobble street, ancient architecture and is a UNESCO Heritage site. Around it you have others ancient towns to visit and a stunning snow mountain.

It is also the base to visit Shagnri-la.

How to get there

Without a second though, flying is the easiest way to get there. Lijiang Airport (LJG) is about 28km south of the city center. From there you can get on a taxi to the citer center.

Though, if you are nearby (Kunming…) you could take a long distance bus or a train

Moving around

The best way to move around is by walking around town or take a Didi (Chinese Uber). One optional way would be by bicycle to get to the nearby attractions.

Where to Stay

Little story, we stayed in House & White Lakeside Lodge, but at this time it was a hostel and what is now the suite was before a yoga/gym room that we really appreciated.

What to eat

There are 2 things that are a must to try in Lijiang:

  • The Rose flower cake
  • The Yunnan cross bridge rice noodles

Plus, if you are a fan of street food, the old town of Lijiang will be a top choice for it.

When to visit:

The best time to visit is Autumn, from October to November which is the driest and clearest time with lots of tree blossoms.

Summer is the rainy season, but it is still enjoyable (we visited it at this time). Spring is also comfortable, and winter are quite cold.

Things to do

Explore Lijiang

If you are there at the right time, you can experience some amazing and lively street at night. Where people dance around fire. They are the Naxi people of Yunnan celebrating some of their festival.

Lijiang Old town

Stroll around the 1000-year-old picturesque old town of Lijiang. Explore the old traditional street of what was ancient china. Stop at some coffee shop, try some street food, and get lost between the buildings.

Mu Mansion

Located within the old town, Mu mansion or Mufu Palace is a representation of the ancient central China architecture during the Ming Dynasty. It was the home of the Mu family, the ancient ruler of the town.

Shuhe Ancient town

Shuhe is located north of Lijiang and is another ancient town. Similar to the Lijiang old town, it’s worth strolling around to get more of the ancient Chinese architecture.

Baisha Village

And when you are tired of the crowded, head 8km north of Lijiang to explore an authentic village of the Naxi people. Birthplace of the Mu’s family and prior economic and cultural center of the region.

Black Dragon Pool & Yu Quan Gong Yuan

Scenic pool located in the Jade Spring park, in the north of Lijiang. Hike the hill of the park to discover a beautiful landscape.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Explore the beautiful snow mountain and get breath-taking views of the region from 4 680m high. You can get there by bus or by tour. Once there you can take the cable car up.

Tips: Do not attempt to get there by bike, it is 38km from Lijiang and the sun over the valley to get there is really strong!

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Visit the scenic canyon of the Jinsha River in a day tour. Located 60km from Lijiang, the place became famous from the legend that a hunted tiger escaped by jumping across the river at the narrowest point (still 25 metres), using the rock in the middle.
