Introduction: Hangzhou Travel Guide

Hangzhou is the capital of the Zhejiang province. The city is home to 10.36 million people and stand on 16 596km².

Even though, Hangzhou kept an historical park with beautiful cobble street and traditional architecture.

The west lake is the end of a waterway coming from Beijing is an amazing place to visit. In its center a small island stands with beautiful scenery.

We travelled there during Chinese national holiday (which we do not recommend), so don’t shock by the number of people of the pictures.

Getting there

If you are coming from abroad, the easiest way would be to first take a plane to Shanghai and then transfer for another one to Hangzhou or to switch to Shanghai train station and get a high-speed train to Hangzhou (approx. 1h)

Moving Around

The major public transportation system of Hangzhou is the bus. There is an extended system of buses and BRT lines.

The city also offers public bicycle. And if you fancy a taxi, as always, we recommend didi (Chinese Uber) but the city also has its own taxi company.

When to Visit Hangzhou

As most part of China, Spring is the best time to visit and then Autumn. Summer is really hot, and winter is cold/polluted.

Best months are April/May and September.

What to Eat

There are tonnes of extra yummy food to be tasted there:

  • BBQ Squid
  • Beggars’ Chicken
  • Hangzhou Streamed Bun
  • West Lake Lotus Root Powder
  • West Lake Fish in Vinegar Gravy

For most of them, we would definitely recommend you eating them from street food stand.
