Introduction

Finding the right place to stay on Easter Island makes a huge difference, especially if you want a quiet base to enjoy the coastline and slow rhythm of Rapa Nui. We spent four nights at Hiku Ote Ika, a charming bungalow on the outskirts of Hanga Roa, and it ended up being one of our favourite experiences on the island. If you’re searching for where to stay on Easter Island, or looking for a peaceful and well-located Rapa Nui accommodation, this spot really sets the tone for a relaxed stay.

Rosy, the owner, picked us up at the airport with a flower necklace and then drove us around Hanga Roa so we could buy groceries, stop at the national park ticket office, and get everything we needed before heading to the bungalow. Honestly, doing all of this on our own right after landing would have been a mission, so her help made the start of our stay much easier.

As of 2024, the bungalow we stayed in isn’t available anymore, but Rosy now offers a smaller property on the same land called Cabaña del Mar Rapanui. The setting, atmosphere, and location remain the same, so it’s still a solid pick when searching for places to stay on Easter Island.

Location

The location of Hiku Ote Ika was exactly what we were looking for. The bungalow sits on the owner’s family land, well outside the noise of Hanga Roa, and you really feel disconnected from everything. No cars, no neighbours, just the sound of the wind and the ocean in the distance.

Walking, you’re about 15–20 minutes from the main street, and around 15 minutes from the entrance of the national park. The road to town follows the coast past Ahu Tahai, which makes even a simple grocery run feel like a mini sightseeing trip. For anyone wanting a quiet stay while still being close to the essentials, this is a great option for Easter Island accommodation.

Hiku Ote Ika Home

The bungalow at Hiku Ote Ika feels instantly welcoming. It’s bright, full of natural light, and opens straight onto the landscape, which gives you the feeling of being tucked into your own corner of the island. For anyone looking for a peaceful Rapa Nui accommodation, this setup works incredibly well — quiet, spacious, and with everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Bedrooms

The main sleeping area sits in the same open space as the living room, but it doesn’t feel cramped at all. The large windows on both sides bring in a lot of light, and waking up with the view of the coast in the distance is something we got used to very quickly. The bed is comfortable, with plenty of pillows and small touches that make the space feel homely — soft throws, colourful cushions, and a few decorative plants. Even with all of this, we still had enough room to roll out our yoga mats without moving furniture around.

A second bedroom is set apart from the main living area. It has twin beds, a desk, and a dresser, making it ideal for kids or for an extra guest. The room is simple but spacious, with big windows that keep it bright during the day. We didn’t use it, but it’s the kind of practical space that makes longer stays on Easter Island much easier.

Living Room

The living room is cosy and blends naturally with the sleeping area. There’s a comfortable couch filled with tropical-style cushions, a small coffee table, and just enough space to relax inside on cooler evenings. The décor is warm — lots of wood, soft tones, and small personal touches — and the large sliding doors open directly onto the terrace, so the room feels connected to the outdoors.

Kitchen

The kitchen is spacious and was one of the things we appreciated the most during our stay. For anyone wondering where to stay on Easter Island while keeping meals affordable, this makes a huge difference. The kitchen is fully equipped: a big fridge with freezer, gas stove, toaster, boiler, and all the utensils and cookware you need for daily meals.

There’s also a large dining table that works well for both eating and planning your days around the island. It’s clear the kitchen has been used over the years, but everything works well, which is really what matters in such a remote location. Tea and instant coffee were provided, which made breakfasts easy.

Bathroom

The bathroom is simple but functional, with a spacious walk-in shower, toilet, and sink. It has natural light coming in from the window, and everything was clean and well maintained. Towels were provided, along with soap, shampoo, and conditioner — small details that are always appreciated when you’re far from the mainland. As on the rest of the island, toilet paper can’t be flushed, but you get used to it quickly.

Terrace

The terrace is easily the best part of Hiku Ote Ika and the reason this place feels so special. You get two different outdoor spaces: one with a long cushioned lounge area filled with colourful pillows, perfect for long breakfasts or slow afternoons; and another with a round table overlooking the coast, ideal for meals outside.

We spent hours here — morning sun, evening drinks, watching the light change over the ocean. Even on cooler days, the terrace made the whole place feel peaceful and private.

If you walk a few minutes down the path, there’s also a natural viewpoint for sunset. It became part of our daily routine, and it’s one of those simple things that makes this place stand out among other Easter Island accommodation options.

Price

Prices on Easter Island vary a lot depending on the type of accommodation you choose, but Hiku Ote Ika sat comfortably in the mid-range compared to other Easter Island accommodation options. It wasn’t the cheapest place on the island, but for us the value came from the privacy, the fully equipped kitchen, and the terrace overlooking the coast — all things that saved us money and made the stay feel special.

The exact bungalow we stayed in is no longer available, but Rosy now rents Cabaña del Mar Rapanui, a slightly smaller property on the same land. Prices there usually change depending on the season, but they remain fair for what you get, especially considering how expensive some places to stay on Easter Island can be.

If your goal is to find a peaceful base with space, comfort, and the possibility to cook your own meals, this type of Rapa Nui accommodation is a great balance between cost and experience.
