Introduction
Some places are more than just a hotel, and Hotel 48° Nord is a perfect example of that. Located in the small village of Breitenbach, in the heart of Alsace, in eastern France, this landscape hotel feels like a serene escape from everyday life. Just over an hour from home for us, yet completely disconnected from everything else.
This stay was also particularly emotional for us. Hotel 48° Nord was a Christmas gift from my parents and my sister, given to us the Christmas after we lost our son Poppy, who was stillborn. It wasn’t just a night away, but a thoughtful way of giving us space, calm, and something gentle to look forward to during a very difficult time.
Hotel 48° Nord, also known as the 48° Nord Landscape Hotel, doesn’t offer classic hotel rooms. Instead, you stay in one of several independent wooden cabins scattered across the hillside, blending naturally into the landscape. The design is inspired by Scandinavian architecture, with a strong focus on simplicity, comfort, and connection to nature.
From the moment you arrive, the pace slows down. There’s no rush, no noise, and no distraction. Whether it’s the views over the forest, the carefully designed interiors, or the overall philosophy of the place, this stay is clearly about taking time and being present. It’s the kind of place you come to switch off, reflect, and breathe, even if only for one night.

What Makes This Stay Unique
Hotel 48° Nord is not designed like a traditional hotel, and that’s exactly what makes it special. From the beginning, the idea behind the 48° Nord Landscape Hotel was to create a place that blends into its surroundings rather than dominating them. Everything here feels intentional, from the architecture to the way the experience is structured.
The hotel is spread across a hillside in Breitenbach, with individual wooden cabins placed at a distance from one another. This creates a real sense of privacy and calm, while still feeling part of a shared space. There’s no main building towering over the landscape, no long corridors, and no feeling of being surrounded by other guests.

The design takes strong inspiration from Scandinavian architecture and lifestyle. Clean lines, natural materials, muted colours, and large windows that frame the landscape rather than distract from it. The focus is on simplicity, functionality, and comfort, without anything feeling cold or minimal for the sake of it.
What also stands out at Hotel 48° Nord is the philosophy behind the stay. This isn’t a place built around entertainment or packed schedules. It’s a place designed to slow you down. Time here revolves around light, nature, meals, and moments of quiet. Whether you come for the design, the nature, or simply to disconnect, the experience gently pushes you to do less, not more.
More than a hotel, 48° Nord feels like a carefully curated pause. A place where architecture, landscape, and atmosphere work together to create something that stays with you long after you leave.

Where You’ll Be Staying
Hotel 48° Nord offers four different types of wooden cabins, called hyttes, each inspired by Scandinavian design and fully integrated into the surrounding landscape. All of them are independent, private, and designed to slow you down.
Accommodation at Hotel 48° Nord includes:
- Fjell hyttes: the largest cabins, ideal for families or small groups, with two levels, a private sauna, and optional Nordic bath
- Tre hyttes: vertical cabins on three levels, designed for couples, inspired by trees and offering panoramic views
- Gräss hyttes: single-level cabins, easy to access, with wide views over the valley and one PMR-friendly option
- Eføy hyttes: compact, two-level tiny-house-style cabins, perfect for a minimalist and immersive stay

Our Stay in a Tre Hytte
We stayed in one of the Tre hyttes, and it was easily one of the most memorable accommodations we’ve experienced in France. Designed like a slender wooden tower inspired by the surrounding trees, the Tre hytte is built vertically over three levels, with each floor offering a different atmosphere.
The lower level is dedicated to the bathroom. It’s surprisingly spacious and well designed, with natural materials and a shower that opens onto the forest through a discreet window. Even in such a functional space, you never lose that feeling of being connected to nature.

The middle level is where the bedroom is located. This part of the hytte feels more enclosed and intimate, almost like a cocoon. The lighting is soft, the space calm, and it’s incredibly quiet at night. It’s the kind of bedroom where you fall asleep quickly and deeply, surrounded by nothing but trees and silence.

The upper level is where the Tre hytte truly shines. This is the lounge area, fully open to the landscape with large windows framing the valley and forest.

It’s also where you’ll find a small working space and, very importantly for us, a real coffee machine using whole coffee beans. Waking up, grinding fresh coffee, and sitting there watching the light change over the hills was one of our favourite moments of the stay.

Waiting for us in the hytte were also complimentary drinks and snacks, including local beers, homemade-style lemonade, and small treats. A simple touch, but one that made the stay feel thoughtful and welcoming from the start.

Our Tre hytte didn’t have a Nordic bath, but it did come with a small outdoor seating area. We used it in morning before checking out, just sitting quietly, listening to the forest, and letting the day slow down naturally. It never felt like anything was missing. The experience was already complete.

Despite its compact footprint, the Tre hytte feels incredibly well balanced. Each level has its purpose, and the way you move upward through the space mirrors the experience of the stay itself: starting grounded, then slowly opening up to light, views, and stillness.

Wellness & Common Areas
Wellness at Hotel 48° Nord follows the same philosophy as the rest of the place: simple, calm, and never crowded. The spa area is intentionally small, designed to be enjoyed quietly rather than shared with dozens of guests at the same time.
The wellness space includes Scandinavian-style baths, a sauna, and a relaxation area, all with views over the surrounding nature. Large windows let the landscape in, making the experience feel connected to the outdoors even when you’re inside. It’s the kind of place where you instinctively lower your voice and slow your movements.

Access to the spa is limited to one-hour time slots, and booking in advance is required. At first, this might sound restrictive, but in reality, it’s what makes the experience so pleasant. During our session, there were very few people, and everything felt peaceful and unrushed. No waiting, no noise, just time to enjoy the warmth and the view.
After the spa, we spent some time back in our hytte, where a complimentary aperitif was waiting for us. A small detail, but one that fit perfectly with the overall rhythm of the stay. Nothing feels rushed at Hotel 48° Nord.
The common areas, just like the wellness space, are there to support a slower pace, whether that means soaking in warm water, sitting quietly with a drink, or simply doing nothing at all.

The Food Experience
Food is a central part of the experience at Hotel 48° Nord, and it follows the same philosophy as the rest of the stay: local, seasonal, and thoughtfully prepared. Both dinner and breakfast are designed to be moments you slow down for, not just something you fit into the day.

For dinner, the hotel offers two menu options: a three-dish menu and a five-dish menu. We had the three-dish option, which felt perfectly balanced after a day spent outside and at the spa. The cuisine is bistronomic in style, with simple yet refined plates that highlight local ingredients without overcomplicating them. Everything was well paced, beautifully presented, and comforting in the best way.

The atmosphere in the restaurant is warm and intimate, making it an ideal setting to wind down in the evening. It never feels formal or stiff, just relaxed and well thought out.

In the morning, breakfast follows the same attention to detail. Products are locally sourced, and each item is clearly labelled with its origin and the producer’s name. It’s a small touch, but one that adds meaning to the meal and reinforces the hotel’s connection to the region.

We took our time over coffee, enjoying the quiet and letting the day begin slowly. At Hotel 48° Nord, meals aren’t just part of the stay, they’re woven into the overall experience of slowing down and being present.

What to Do Around the Hotel
One of the great advantages of staying at Hotel 48° Nord is that nature starts right at the property. You can head out for a walk directly from the hotel, with several paths leading into the surrounding forest and hills. It makes it easy to step outside without planning much or getting into the car.

Beyond that, the region offers several well-known hikes just a short drive away. Before arriving at the hotel, we stopped for a hike to the Nideck waterfall, a beautiful walk through the forest leading to an impressive cascade. It was a perfect way to arrive already immersed in nature before checking in.

On our way out, we chose another classic hike in the area, this time up to Barr Castle. The trail took us through a moody, foggy landscape at first, before opening up above the clouds to clear blue skies and wide views. It was one of those hikes where the atmosphere changes completely as you climb.

After that final walk, we headed to Obernai, where we stopped for a well-earned hot treat in town before continuing our journey. It was an easy and enjoyable way to combine a unique stay at the hotel with some of the best hiking the region has to offer.

Practical Information Before You Go
Hotel 48° Nord is located in the small village of Breitenbach, in Alsace, surrounded by forests and hiking trails. Despite the feeling of being far away from everything, it’s actually very easy to reach.
The hotel is about one hour from Strasbourg and roughly 45 minutes from Colmar by car. Having a car is highly recommended, as it gives you the freedom to explore the surrounding hiking areas and nearby villages at your own pace.
A one-night stay is enough to experience the hotel, but if you can, staying two nights allows you to fully settle into the rhythm of the place. With the spa, dinner, slow mornings, and nearby hikes, everything makes more sense when you’re not watching the clock.

The spa needs to be booked in advance and is limited to one-hour time slots to keep the experience calm and uncrowded. The same goes for dinner, which should be reserved ahead of time, especially on weekends.
Hotel 48° Nord is best suited for couples, solo travellers, or anyone looking for a quiet, design-focused stay in nature. It’s not a place for nightlife or busy schedules, but rather for slowing down, disconnecting, and enjoying simple moments.
Booking early is recommended, particularly if you’re hoping for a specific type of hytte or one with a private Nordic bath, as availability is limited.

Is it Worth It?
Hotel 48° Nord is not a budget stay, and it’s important to see it for what it is: an experience rather than just a place to sleep. You’re paying for the architecture, the setting, the sense of calm, and the overall atmosphere as much as for the accommodation itself.
For us, it was absolutely worth it. The combination of thoughtful design, privacy, nature, and food created a stay that felt meaningful and restorative. Everything is done with intention, from the way the cabins are positioned to how time is structured during your stay.

That said, this is not the right place for everyone. If you’re looking for entertainment, a busy spa, or lots of activities on-site, you might find it too quiet. But if you enjoy slow travel, minimalism, and being surrounded by nature, Hotel 48° Nord delivers exactly what it promises.
It’s the kind of stay that stays with you, not because of luxury in the traditional sense, but because of how it makes you feel while you’re there.

We’d recommend this stay to people who value experiences over comfort in the traditional sense, who enjoy simple pleasures like a good meal, a warm sauna, and a view that changes with the light. It’s also a wonderful choice if you’re looking for a meaningful break, a place to reset, or simply to spend time without distraction.
For us, this stay was more than just a night away. It was a thoughtful pause, a moment of calm, and an experience we’ll remember for a long time. If that’s the kind of travel you’re drawn to, Hotel 48° Nord is well worth considering.
