Marrakesh Itinerary

Introduction

Morocco is a North African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. It is distinguished by its Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences.

For travelers, it is one of the most picturesque countries to visit. It is without a doubt one of the most photo-friendly countries. From the old cities, to the beautiful and colourful tiles, to the sand of the Sahara… Morocco has a lot to offer.

We already had written a complete “2 weeks Morocco Itinerary: The Unforgettable Road Trip” but we understand that it is not made for everyone as it involves more than 2500km on Moroccan roads. That’s why we are creating this “10-day Marrakesh Itinerary for Exploring the best of Morocco”. If you want to avoid the hassle of going around Morocco, then this Marrakesh itinerary will definitely help you plan your trip.

From Marrakesh, you can easily go to the best places in Morocco, see the Sahara desert, the Atlas mountains, the old Kasbah and so much more.

Does that sound interest? If so, let’s dive it this Marrakesh Itinerary.

Visit Marrakech

Getting there

Getting to this Marrakesh Itinerary starting point is simple, thanks to Marrakesh well-connected airport and central location in Morocco.

Most travelers fly into Marrakesh Menara Airport (RAK), which has direct flights from major European cities and some long-haul connections. The airport is just 15–20 minutes from the city center, so you can quickly get to your riad or hotel.

From the airport, you have a few options:

  • Taxi: The most convenient option. Make sure to agree on a price before getting in (expect around 150–200 MAD to the medina).
  • Airport Shuttle: Some hotels and riads offer private transfers, which can be worth booking for a stress-free arrival.
  • Bus (L19): A cheaper choice (around 30 MAD) that stops at key points in Marrakesh, including Jemaa el-Fna square.

If you’re already in Morocco, you can also reach Marrakesh by train (from cities like Casablanca, Rabat, or Fes) or by long-distance buses (Supratours and CTM are the most reliable companies).

Moving Around

Getting around our Marrakesh Itinerary depends on how much exploring you want to do, both inside the city and on day trips.

Within the city, the medina is entirely walkable. Most of the best sights – the souks, Jemaa el-Fna, Bahia Palace – are all close to each other, so you’ll spend most of your time on foot. Be prepared for narrow alleys and a bit of chaos, but that’s part of the charm.

For longer distances or if you’re staying outside the medina, you can use:

  • Petit taxis: Cheap and everywhere, but always ask the driver to use the meter or agree on a fare first.
  • Horse-drawn carriages (calèches): A touristy but fun way to get around – especially for a ride around the medina walls at sunset.
  • Public buses: They exist but aren’t very practical for visitors.

To explore beyond Marrakesh which we included in this Marrakesh Itinerary, the easiest option is joining organized tours. There are excellent day trips to places like:

  • The Atlas Mountains & Ourika Valley – easy hikes, Berber villages, waterfalls.
  • Essaouira – a coastal escape for fresh seafood and a relaxed vibe.
  • Ouzoud Waterfalls – one of Morocco’s tallest waterfalls.

And, of course, if you want to visit the Sahara Desert, you’ll need at least a 2- or 3-day tour that includes a camel trek and an overnight stay in a desert camp.

If you’re confident driving in Morocco, renting a car can give you more freedom for road trips in this Marrakesh Itinerary, but for most visitors, tours are the easiest, stress-free way to see more without worrying about navigation or parking.

When to Visit

The best time to follow this Marrakesh itinerary really depends on what you want to see and do, but some seasons make the trip a lot more comfortable.

  • Spring (March to May): This is one of the best times to visit Marrakesh. The weather is warm but not too hot (20–28°C / 68–82°F), perfect for wandering the medina, visiting gardens, and taking day trips to the Atlas Mountains.
  • Summer (June to August): Summer can be intense, with temperatures soaring to 35–45°C (95–113°F). It’s manageable if you plan early morning visits and take breaks during the hottest hours, but the Sahara tours can be tough in this heat.
  • Autumn (September to November): Another great window for this Marrakesh itinerary. Temperatures are similar to spring (20–30°C / 68–86°F), and the light over the city and desert is magical.
  • Winter (December to February): Winter is mild in Marrakesh, with daytime temps around 18–22°C (64–72°F), but nights are chilly (as low as 5°C / 41°F). It’s the quietest time, great for sightseeing without the crowds, though it can be cold on desert tours.

Tip: If your Marrakesh itinerary includes a Sahara trip, avoid July and August if possible. Spring and autumn are ideal for combining the city, mountains, and desert without extremes.

Where to Stay

For a truly memorable experience, staying in a traditional riad in the heart of Marrakesh’s medina is a must. These historic houses, built around courtyards, offer an intimate and authentic atmosphere right in the middle of all the action.

  • (€): Riad Tahyra: A cozy and affordable riad with a warm, welcoming feel, perfect if you’re traveling on a budget but still want to stay in the medina.
  • (€€): Riad Helen: Mid-range and charming, with beautifully decorated rooms and a peaceful courtyard that feels worlds away from the busy souks outside.
  • (€€€): La Sultana: A luxury riad and one of Marrakesh’s most iconic stays, offering exquisite design, top-notch service, and a rooftop with views over the medina.

If you’d rather have more space and a quieter base, you can also stay in the modern city center of Marrakesh. Renting an apartment like Sweet Jacob’s Apartment gives you a local experience with easy access to shops, restaurants, and transport — while still being just a short ride from the medina.

What to Eat

One of the highlights of any Marrakesh itinerary is the food. Moroccan cuisine is rich, flavorful, and full of spices — and there’s no better place to taste it than right here. Start with a classic tagine — a slow-cooked dish made in the clay pot it’s named after. You’ll find endless variations, from chicken with preserved lemon and olives to tender lamb with prunes.

Another must-try is couscous, often served on Fridays, piled high with vegetables and meat, and topped with a ladle of rich broth. For street food, don’t miss briouats (crispy, savory pastries stuffed with meat or cheese) and maakouda (Moroccan potato cakes).

When it comes to sweets, chebakia (honey-coated sesame cookies) and msemmen (a layered Moroccan pancake, best drizzled with honey) are perfect with a glass of fresh mint tea.

And of course, visit the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square in the evening, when the food stalls come alive. It’s the perfect place to try harira soup, grilled meats, or even something adventurous like snail broth — if you’re feeling brave.
