After Strasbourg and Colmar, the Obernai Christmas Market is the next major one in Alsace, and for good reason.
Obernai is one of those towns that instantly makes you feel at home. It’s small, charming, and has everything you picture when you think of Christmas in Alsace — half-timbered houses, lights everywhere, and that sweet smell of mulled wine in the air.
While we really like the smaller Christmas markets, the Obernai Christmas Market is one that we enjoy visiting a lot, especially since it is really close to Strasbourg and really convenient for us.
It’s less crowded, easier to explore, and still feels very much a local experience. You don’t just see tourists here, you see families from nearby villages coming to enjoy the market too.
The whole center turns into one big Christmas village with food stalls, local crafts, and people chatting over hot drinks.
And if you are into hiking, you are right at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, a stunning monastery perched in the Vosges mountains. So, spending a whole day there, mixing hiking and Christmas markets, is possible.

Getting there
Obernai Christmas Market is really easy to reach, especially if you’re already exploring the Alsace region.
- By car: It’s about a 30-minute drive from Strasbourg and around 45 minutes from Colmar. Parking can get busy during weekends, but there are several free lots. We usually park at Parking des Fines Herbes, Parking des Remparts or Parc de stationnement de l’Altau. From there, it’s only a short walk to the market.
- By train: There are regular regional trains from Strasbourg, and the ride takes around 25 minutes. Once you arrive, it’s a quick 10-minute walk from the train station to the heart of the Christmas market.
We usually drive there because it’s so close to home, but even if you’re staying in Strasbourg for a few days, a half-day trip to the Obernai Christmas Market is super easy and definitely worth it.

The Obernai Christmas Market is filled with the delicious smell of vin chaud, roasted chestnuts, and melted cheese — you’ll definitely want to snack as you wander. Try some tarte flambée, pretzels, or pain d’épices, all local Alsatian favorites.
Here are the local treats you shouldn’t miss while wandering through the market:
- Vin chaud (mulled wine): The star of every Alsatian Christmas market! Try both the red and white versions, often made with local Alsace wines and spiced with cinnamon and orange peel.
- Bredele: These traditional Alsatian Christmas biscuits come in dozens of varieties — buttery, nutty, or spiced — and are baked by nearly every family in the region.

- Männele: A soft, sweet brioche shaped like a little man, often enjoyed with hot chocolate.
- Choucroute garnie: Sauerkraut served with sausages and potatoes — the ultimate comfort food for a chilly winter evening.
- Hot chestnuts: Found throughout the market, roasted on-site, and perfect to warm your hands.
If you’re looking for a cozy place to sit down and warm up, here are a few of our favorite spots in the Obernai Christmas Market:

- La Cour de Mémé – Known for its comforting soups and friendly atmosphere.
You can easily mix a few bites from the food stalls with a sit-down meal — that’s part of what makes the Obernai Christmas Market so enjoyable.

How to visit
The Obernai Christmas Market is one of the easiest and most enjoyable to explore in Alsace. The entire market is centered in the old town, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll through cobbled streets filled with lights, music, and the scent of mulled wine and spices. You can easily spend half a day to a full day wandering around, stopping for food, and visiting nearby attractions.
Here’s how we recommend visiting the Obernai Christmas Market step by step:
Start at Place du Marché – This is the heart of the Christmas Market and where the festive magic begins. The square is surrounded by half-timbered houses, and the big Christmas tree stands proudly in the middle. You’ll find most of the wooden chalets here, selling local crafts, candles, ornaments, and delicious Alsatian specialties like pain d’épices and bretzels.

Walk along Rue du Marché – Follow this street to soak in the local atmosphere. It’s one of the most charming streets in Obernai, beautifully decorated with fairy lights and garlands. You’ll find plenty of food stalls along the way, perfect for grabbing a cup of vin chaud or a tart flambée to enjoy as you walk.

Stop at Place André Neher – This small but lively square often hosts artisans and local producers selling handcrafted goods and regional treats. It’s a great spot to pick up unique Christmas gifts or souvenirs made in Alsace.

Continue to Rue du Général Gouraud– This main street becomes pedestrian-only during the market and is lined with decorations. Be sure to make a turn right after passing the market square to reach the Obernai church and admire the nativity scene.

Reach Place de l’Étoile, one of the coziest areas of the market. It’s also a perfect place to take a short break with a mulled wine while enjoying the carousel.

Loop back toward Autour du Beffroi – Before ending your visit, walk around the Beffroi, Obernai’s historic belfry. This area is beautifully illuminated in the evening, and from here you’ll circle back to Place du Marché. The tower itself is one of the symbols of Obernai, and the nearby streets are perfect for final photos of the market’s twinkling lights.
If you’re visiting later in the day, stay until nightfall — that’s when Obernai really shines. The warm glow from the lights reflects on the cobblestones, the smell of mulled wine fills the air, and local choirs or brass bands often play in the background.

Tip: If you have a car and want to extend your visit, you can easily combine your Obernai Christmas Market day with a trip to Mont Sainte-Odile, a beautiful monastery perched on a mountain nearby. It’s only about a 20-minute drive and offers incredible panoramic views of the Alsace plains — a great way to end the day before heading back to Strasbourg or Colmar.
