Introduction
Quimper is one of the most charming towns in Brittany (France) steeped in Celtic heritage and rich history. Originally settled during the Roman Empire (around 495 AD), it later became the historic capital of the region.
Wandering through Quimper feels like stepping back in time. Footbridges span the peaceful rivers, colorful half-timbered houses line the cobbled streets, and the majestic Saint-Corentin Cathedral, with its 35.4-meter-high spires, dominates the old town.
Quimper has a truly authentic, rustic atmosphere that’s best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. It’s a perfect stop on a Brittany road trip, and anything from half a day to a full day will allow you to experience the heart of the city.

Getting there
The easiest and most flexible way to reach Quimper is by car—perfect if you’re planning a road trip through Brittany. Driving allows you to explore charming villages, coastal towns, and hidden spots along the way.
If you’re traveling from Paris, there’s also a direct TGV (high-speed train) to Quimper. The journey takes around 3 hours and 37 minutes, making it a convenient and comfortable option.
Alternatively, long-distance buses like Flixbus offer routes between Paris and Quimper. The journey takes about 8 hours and 35 minutes and usually runs on weekends only, so it’s less ideal unless you’re on a tighter budget or prefer slow travel.
For the best experience, we recommend coming by car—you’ll see so much more of Brittany than just Quimper.

Moving Around
Once you’re in Quimper, the best way to explore is on foot. The town is compact and easy to navigate, with most highlights—like the old town, the cathedral, and the riverside—within walking distance. Even the Lanniron Castle is just a 30-minute walk from the city center.
If you’re traveling by car, you’ll find plenty of public parking options around town. And if you prefer public transport, Quimper also has a local bus network that can take you to neighborhoods further out.

When to Visit
Quimper is a lovely year-round destination, but each season offers a different charm depending on what you’re after.
- Spring (March to May): A beautiful time to visit as the town awakens with blooming flowers and riverside walks become especially scenic. The weather is mild, and crowds are still low, making it ideal for a relaxed cultural visit.
- Summer (June to August): This is peak season, with warm weather and lively streets. The city hosts events like the Festival de Cornouaille, celebrating Breton culture with music and dance. It’s the best time for festivals, terrace dining, and exploring the nearby coast—but expect more tourists.
- Autumn (September to November): A quieter, more peaceful time to visit. The colors change, prices drop, and the crowds thin out. It’s still warm enough in early autumn to enjoy outdoor strolls, and the town’s atmosphere becomes more intimate and relaxed.
- Winter (December to February): The slowest season in Quimper. While some attractions may operate on reduced hours, it’s a good time for a cozy cultural getaway. Museums are quiet, the historic center feels festive in December, and accommodation is often more affordable.
Our recommendation: Visit in late spring or early autumn for the best mix of good weather, manageable crowds, and authentic atmosphere.
