planning a trip to

Thailand

Here is what you need to know:

Thailand is one of the most popular travel destinations, often a top choice for first-time travelers. It’s an ideal place to start your journey around the world. With its easy transportation, delicious food, affordable prices, and year-round sunny, warm weather, Thailand has everything you could wish for.

We spent about three weeks exploring the country, traveling from the north to the south and even visiting the islands. For us, the north was magical – with incredibly friendly locals, stunning landscapes, and endless activities. The south and the islands, while more touristy, were still a lot of fun.

One of the things we miss the most is hopping on a scooter to grab some delicious street food!

About

Thailand, officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand, is located in Southeast Asia. It covers an area of 513,120 km² and is home to over 69 million people, making it the 50th largest country in the world by land area and the 22nd most populous country.

The capital and largest city of Thailand is Bangkok.

Human presence in the region dates back to the 11th century, when groups of people migrated from southwestern China, marking the beginnings of Thailand’s rich cultural history.

Thailand’s flag, also known as the Tricolor flag, symbolizes nation, religion, and king. The red stripes represent the blood spilled in the country’s fight to maintain its independence. The white stands for purity and Buddhism, which is the predominant religion in Thailand, while the blue symbolizes the monarchy, reflecting the nation’s respect and loyalty to the royal family.

A must-do experience in Bangkok is riding a tuk-tuk through the bustling streets. Although it might not be the cheapest form of transportation, it’s undoubtedly one of the most fun. Tuk-tuks are the unofficial taxis of the city and can be found everywhere, offering a unique and lively way to explore the vibrant streets of Bangkok.

Buddhism is the largest religion in Thailand, with over 91% of the population practicing it. The country follows Theravada Buddhism, the oldest extant school of Buddhism, which emphasizes the teachings and practices rooted in the Pali Canon, the earliest written records of the Buddha’s teachings.

Thai massage is world-renowned for its therapeutic benefits. It is a traditional healing art that combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. This unique blend promotes relaxation, relieves tension, improves flexibility, and enhances overall well-being.

What to expect?

Language: The official language is Thai, but English is widely understood in tourist areas, so it’s not difficult to get around speaking only English.

Food: We highly recommend trying the street food. Thailand is famous for its vibrant street markets, and every place we visited was safe to eat at.

Transportation: Flying is the quickest way to get around the country, while buses are great for traveling between nearby cities. Renting a scooter is the most affordable and convenient option once you’re in a city.

Money: The currency is the Thai Baht. At the time we visited, 1€ was worth around 35 Baht. In large cities and tourist areas, credit cards and ATMs are reliable, but for street food and small purchases, cash is preferred.

Plugs: Thailand uses type A, B, and C plugs. The standard voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz.

Safety: Thailand is considered a safe destination for travelers. Going out at night is generally safe, even for solo travelers, though it’s important to watch out for pickpocketing.
