Introduction: Villa general Belgrano

Villa General Belgrano is a small mountain village of approx. 6 000 inhabitants. It was founded in 1930 by 2 German speculators for its agricultural potential. It was made following German architecture of the time and really looks like an Alps village which attracted more immigrants from Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria.

Today Villa General Belgrano is a touristic place where lots of local people come with their family to enjoy the Alps style village, relax, walk around and enjoy restaurants in town.

Restaurants

On top of looking alike a German village, it also provides German food. In the center of town where all restaurants are located you can enjoy traditional dishes such as:

  • Goulash with spaetzle
  • Wiener schnitzel
  • Flammkuchen
  • Craft beers

And Ice-cream, the town is full of shop selling all type of them. Try the Super dulce del Leche.

For dinner, be aware that some of the restaurant only serve it starting at 8pm or 8:30pm. It is common to see people drinking coffee, eating sweets and cake around 7pm or 8pm.

Grocery

In the city center there isn’t any supermarket, you need to get outside of the main area to get one. (but that’s not too far). But can find small store, vegetables, and dietetic store in the city center.

Things to do

The top attraction in town

  • Walk around town to explore its architecture
  • Trek around town (for the trek list, the easiest is to ask the information center)
  • Chill at paseo de Los Arroyos

Around town

  • Visit la Cumbrecita.

This is also an Alp village. Even smaller than Villa general Belgrano. It is a nice day trip to do.

We took the 10am buses from “Pajaero Blanco”. The bus wasn’t on time, but we made it 1h later around 11:10am.  We walked around town, stops at the local shops that sell various items and grocery from Argentina but as well from Germany or Switzerland.

Easily reachable we went to the waterfall and went around looking at other touristic spots. It was great but quickly become crowded.

We had made our lunch, so we found ourselves a nice spot and ate. And later on, took the 1:40pm bus back to Villa general Belgrano.

Other things to do

  • One day tour to Cero Champaqui
  • 3 days trek to Cero Champaqui.

Cerro Champaqui is the highest summit of the “Sierras Grande” mountains. It can be reach in one day (by renting a car or take a tour) by first going to Villa Yacanto and then follow a road for 1h30. That will lead you a small 40min trek to the summit.

We had asked local tour operator about it, but in the end decided not to do because it seems too touristic and the weather conditions didn’t allow it.

The tour operator we asked there was “Champaqui adventure”, we contacted them on WhatsApp and there answered quickly. (+54 9 3546 43 1046)

Where to stay

Posada del Centro

Where we stayed. It was a nice double room with a patio. Spacious enough to do Yoga in it. You have a kitchen that allows you to make your breakfast. Have coffee and tea free all day. The kitchen doesn’t have stow or oven. Location is in the city center, 1min from the tourist information center and 10min from the bus station

Check it directly on booking here

The hostelhouse

Casa de Amigos. Same owner as the Posade del centro. It is more a hostel like place to stay. With dormitory and double room as well. A bit more expensive but with better and bigger facilities.
