Introduction
We have been there a few times in Annecy, as a good friend of ours is living there. We must say, the place didn’t disappoint—its reputation is truly well-earned. Interestingly, my mother visited Annecy decades ago, and to this day, she still praises the city for its beauty and charm.
Annecy is an Alpine town located in Haute-Savoie, nestled in the French Alps and surrounded by impressive mountain landscapes. It’s famous for its massive lake, aptly named Lake Annecy, and its picturesque old town, known for cobbled streets, winding canals, and pastel-colored houses. Towering above the city is the medieval Château d’Annecy, which once served as the home of the Counts of Geneva and now houses a museum.
While exploring the city, we took time to stroll through the old town, indulge in ice cream, hike in the nearby Alps, and bike around the stunning lake, stopping at local beaches along the way.
In this article, we’ll share our experiences and highlight all the best things to do in Annecy. If you’re planning a trip to the French Alps region, Annecy should undoubtedly be on your list.

But if you plan on going around the lake, you will either need a car or a bike as the total lake length is about 40km. We rented ours at Mobilboard – Location vélo électrique, trottinette & Segway

We recommend to rent a car through Discover Cars with free cancellation. Book your rental car here.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Annecy depends on the type of experience you’re looking for, as the town offers something unique in every season:
- Spring (March to May): Annecy comes alive with blooming flowers and pleasant weather. Fewer tourists than in summer, so you can enjoy a quieter experience.
- Summer (June to August): This is peak tourist season, with warm weather perfect for swimming in Lake Annecy, hiking the surrounding Alps, and enjoying water sports like paddleboarding and kayaking. Expect the town to be busy, but the vibrant atmosphere and long sunny days make it worthwhile.
- Autumn (September to November): The fall colors create a stunning backdrop around the lake and mountains. The weather remains mild, especially in September, making it ideal for hiking and sightseeing. The summer crowds taper off, offering a more peaceful experience.

Best Overall Time: Late Spring (May to June): Combines pleasant weather, blooming landscapes, and fewer crowds than peak summer. Early Autumn (September): Offers beautiful scenery, mild temperatures, and fewer tourists.

Where to Stay
We’d recommend staying near Annecy’s old town, where you can walk to the lake, the canals, and most of the sights without needing a car. It makes the experience so much easier — you can just step out and be in the middle of it all.
- (€): Hôtel du Château: A charming little hotel right by the castle. It’s simple, affordable, and has that cozy, old-town feel.
- (€€): Hôtel du Nord: Central and comfortable, this spot is perfect if you want something mid-range with easy access to everything.
- (€€€): Le Pélican: A stylish, modern hotel by the lake with beautiful rooms and views. A great choice if you want to treat yourself while staying close to the old town.

Best things to do in Annecy
Wander Annecy’s Old Town (Vieille Ville)
One of the very best things to do in Annecy is to lose yourself in its Old Town, a postcard‑perfect maze of cobbled streets, narrow canals, and pastel‑colored buildings. Every corner feels like it’s from another time, with flower‑draped bridges, little squares, and centuries‑old facades.
You’ll find boutiques, cafés, and local shops tucked along the lanes, making it just as fun to browse as it is to simply wander. Whether you stop for a coffee by the water or take photos on every bridge, the Old Town is the part of Annecy that will stay with you long after you leave.

Step Inside Cathédrale Saint-Pierre
Right in the middle of Annecy’s Old Town, the Cathédrale Saint‑Pierre is easy to pass by — but you shouldn’t. This 16th‑century cathedral has a calm, almost hidden feel from the outside, but step inside and you’re met with a beautiful baroque interior, soaring arches, and impressive organ pipes.
It’s a quiet pause from the busy streets outside, a place to sit for a moment, look up at the details, and take in a different side of Annecy’s history.

Visit Le Palais de l’Île
Sitting right in the middle of the Thiou River, the Palais de l’Île looks like something out of a fairytale. This medieval castle, once a prison and courthouse, is now a small history museum — but honestly, most people come just to see it. With its stone walls and pointed roof surrounded by water, it’s easily one of the most photographed spots in Annecy.
And here’s a tip: grab a local ice cream from one of the nearby shops, sit by the river, and enjoy the view. It makes this stop even sweeter.

Stroll Through Jardins de l’Europe
Right on the edge of Lake Annecy, the Jardins de l’Europe are where the town slows down a little. Shaded paths weave between tall trees, open lawns invite you to sit for a while, and every turn gives you another beautiful view of the lake and the mountains behind it.
It’s the kind of spot that works for everything — a quiet morning walk, an afternoon picnic, or just a break from exploring the Old Town.

Cross the Pont des Amours
The Pont des Amours, or “Lovers’ Bridge,” is one of Annecy’s most romantic spots. This little footbridge stretches across the canal, opening up to gorgeous views of Lake Annecy and the mountains in the distance.
It’s a favorite place for photos, strolls, and quiet moments, and legend says couples who kiss here will stay together forever. Whether you believe the story or not, it’s hard not to be charmed by the setting.

Enjoy Lake Annecy
Lake Annecy is the heart of the town — and honestly, one of the reasons people fall in love with this place. With its crystal‑clear waters and mountain backdrop, it’s no surprise it’s often called Europe’s cleanest lake.
We spent hours here, and it was easily a highlight of our time in Annecy. You can swim, rent a paddle boat, take a cruise, or just sit by the shore and watch the light change on the water.
Tip: Rent a bike and cycle around the lake. There’s a path that takes you past little beaches, picnic spots, and villages — the perfect way to see more than just the town.

Relax at Plage Municipale de Sevrier
Just a short ride from Annecy, the Plage Municipale de Sevrier is one of the nicest spots to slow things down. This family‑friendly beach has everything you need for an easy day by the lake — picnic tables, a playground for kids, shady spots to rest, and plenty of space to swim.
There are even water sports rentals if you want to get out on the lake. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a whole afternoon without even realizing how much time has passed.

Unwind at Plage de St‑Jorioz
For a quieter spot on the lake, Plage de St‑Jorioz is a gem. With its stunning mountain backdrop and calm, clear water, it’s the perfect place for a swim, a lazy afternoon of sunbathing, or a picnic by the shore.
It’s less busy than some of the other beaches around Annecy, which makes it ideal if you’re looking for a more peaceful escape while still enjoying that incredible scenery.

Escape to Plage du Château
Near Duingt, you’ll find Plage du Château — and it quickly became our favorite spot on Lake Annecy. It’s not a traditional sandy beach, but rather a hidden lake access tucked under huge old trees in a quiet little park.
In the heat of summer, the shade here is a lifesaver, and the whole place has a calm, almost secret feel. For us, it was one of the best things to do in Annecy, the kind of place you stumble on and never forget.

Tip: We never travel without our DJI Mini 3 PRO drone anymore — it’s totally worth having to capture places from a whole new perspective.
Walk Through the Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Bout du Lac d’Annecy
At the very southern tip of Lake Annecy, the Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Bout du Lac d’Annecy feels like stepping into a different world. This protected reserve is a mix of wetlands, meadows, and forest, with easy walking trails that wind through the area.
It’s a great spot for birdwatching and a peaceful break from the busier parts of the lake. The scenery here is quieter, wilder — and it’s a reminder that Lake Annecy isn’t just about the beaches and villages, but also about its rich natural side.
Explore Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard
Perched high on a hillside with sweeping views of Lake Annecy, the Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard looks like something out of a storybook. This 13th‑century castle has been expanded over the centuries, blending Gothic and Renaissance details into one striking structure.
You can tour parts of the château to see its grand rooms, antique furniture, and family history — it’s been owned by the same family for nearly 1,000 years. Even if you don’t go inside, just seeing it from below is enough to feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale.

Head Up to the Paraglider Takeoff Ground
If you want a mix of adventure and jaw‑dropping views, head to one of Annecy’s paragliding takeoff points — the most famous being Col de la Forclaz. From here, paragliders launch into the sky, and you get to watch them float above the lake with the Alps as a backdrop.
Even if you’re not planning to jump, it’s worth coming just for the view and the atmosphere. We brought a picnic for dinner up here, and it turned into one of those evenings you don’t forget.

Hike Up La Tournette
Towering above Lake Annecy, La Tournette is the highest peak in the area and the ultimate challenge for hikers. The trail isn’t an easy stroll — it’s a proper, demanding hike — but the payoff is huge. From the summit, you get unreal panoramic views of Lake Annecy, the surrounding Alps, and on a clear day, even Mont Blanc in the distance.
It’s a full‑day adventure and one for those who love a bit of effort with their scenery. If you’re up for it, this is Annecy at its most epic.
Venture Into the Alps
Annecy is more than just a lake town — it’s also a gateway to the Alps. From here, you’re only a short drive from some of Europe’s most spectacular mountains, hiking trails, and ski slopes.
Even if you don’t plan to climb or ski, just getting into the alpine valleys and villages for a day is unforgettable. The views alone make it one of the best things to do while you’re in Annecy.

Hike in Semnoz
Just 30 minutes from Annecy, Semnoz is the mountain locals head to when they want fresh air without the crowds. In summer, it’s perfect for hiking through alpine meadows and forest trails, with sweeping views of Lake Annecy and Mont Blanc on clear days.
It’s not a tough climb, which makes it great for a relaxed day outdoors, and in winter, the area turns into a small ski resort — ideal for families or beginners.
