things to do in Saint-Tropez

Introduction

Saint-Tropez was our next stop after Nice and Monaco, a classic destination on the French Riviera. This coastal town has long been a magnet for artists and famously attracted the international “jet set” in the 1960s. It’s still known for its glamorous beaches, lively nightlife, and that unmistakable Riviera vibe. The cobblestoned La Ponche quarter hints at its history as a quiet fishing village, though today, yachts definitely outnumber fishing boats in the Vieux Port (Old Port).

One thing we didn’t expect was to be there during “Chefs in Saint-Tropez Celebrate the Producers.” This annual event brings together some of France’s top chefs and their favorite suppliers. As we wandered through the fair, we discovered incredible local ingredients and got a peek at what makes the region’s cuisine so special.

In this article, we’ll share our own experience exploring Saint-Tropez and highlight the best things to do. If you’re planning a trip to the south of France and the French Riviera, make sure Saint-Tropez is on your list. But enough talk—let’s dive into the best things to do in Saint-Tropez.

How to get to Saint-Tropez

Getting to Saint-Tropez can take a little planning, but that’s part of what keeps its exclusive vibe alive!

  • By Car: The most common way to reach Saint-Tropez is by car. From Nice, it’s roughly a 2-hour drive (about 115 km) along the stunning coastal roads or via the A8 motorway. Be prepared for traffic in high season, especially near Sainte-Maxime and the approach to Saint-Tropez itself. Parking in town can be tight, so look up options in advance.
  • By Train + Bus: There’s no train station in Saint-Tropez itself. If you’re coming by train, head to Saint-Raphaël Valescure station. From there, you can take a bus or a seasonal boat connection to Saint-Tropez. It’s a good option if you want to avoid driving.
  • By Boat: One of the most scenic ways to arrive! Ferries and private boats run between ports like Saint-Raphaël and Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Tropez. It’s a relaxing way to skip road traffic and take in the coastline from the water.
  • By Tour: If you’re based in Nice, Cannes, or other Riviera towns, consider a guided day trip. Many tours handle the driving (and parking headaches) for you while stopping at the best viewpoints and villages along the way.

No matter how you arrive, getting to Saint-Tropez is part of the adventure—and once you’re there, you’ll see why it’s such a legendary Riviera stop.

Moving Around

Saint-Tropez is surprisingly easy to explore once you’re there. The town itself is quite compact, and most of the best sights are within walking distance of the Vieux Port.

  • On Foot: Wandering on foot is the best way to soak up the vibe of Saint-Tropez. Stroll through the La Ponche old quarter with its narrow cobblestone streets, browse the shops and cafés around the port, and wander up to the Citadel for sweeping views over the bay.
  • By Bike or Scooter: If you want to go a bit further—like to the beaches—renting a bike or scooter is a great option. It gives you flexibility without the hassle of parking a car in town.
  • By Bus: Saint-Tropez has a local bus network that connects the town with nearby beaches like Pampelonne and other villages in the Gulf. It’s a budget-friendly and easy way to get around if you’re not driving.
  • By Car: If you have a car, you’ll have freedom to explore the broader area, but parking in town can be tricky and expensive, especially in summer. It’s best to park once and then walk or use other options to get around locally.
  • By Boat: In season, you can hop on boat shuttles between Saint-Tropez and nearby towns like Sainte-Maxime. It’s a scenic, relaxing way to skip road traffic and see the beautiful Gulf of Saint-Tropez from the water.

When to Visit

Saint-Tropez has a classic Mediterranean climate, making it an attractive destination most of the year. But the best time really depends on what kind of vibe you’re looking for.

  • Spring (March to May): Pleasant and sunny with temperatures around 15–22 °C (59–72 °F). This is a great time to visit before the crowds arrive. Flowers are in bloom, the town is waking up for the season, and everything feels relaxed yet lively.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot and bustling, with temperatures between 25–35 °C (77–95 °F). This is peak season—beaches are packed, nightlife is buzzing, and the famous jet-set vibe is in full swing. Expect crowds and higher prices, but also the classic Riviera energy that made Saint-Tropez famous.
  • Autumn (September to November): Still warm, with temperatures around 18–28 °C (64–82 °F) in early autumn. September and October are fantastic months to visit, with fewer tourists, warm seas, and mellow weather. By November, things quiet down even more, but you’ll find a peaceful, authentic village atmosphere.
  • Winter (December to February): Mild but much quieter, with temperatures around 8–15 °C (46–59 °F). Many places close for the season, but you’ll get to see a more local side of Saint-Tropez without the crowds.

We loved visiting in May—warm enough to enjoy the beaches and outdoor cafés, but still calm and laid-back before the summer rush. It’s the perfect time if you want to balance good weather with a more relaxed vibe.
