Introduction

El Chalten is a small mountain village in Santa Cruz province in the “Los Glaciares” National park. The village is famous for behind near the base of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy, 2 mountains famous for climbing but also hiking.

For those reasons, El Chalten was named Argentina’s Trekking capital.

The village inhabits around 350 people all year round. We stayed 3 nights there but if you would ask us again how many day in El Chalten, we would add one or two more nights.

Mapping the day

El Chalten

As a small village El Chalten is kinda spread. Nevertheless, there is what could be call a main street where lots of restaurants, shops and stores are located.

The main street is called: Avenue San Martin

Pricing

Basically, almost everything is more expensive in El Chalten. Food, grocery, souvenir, outdoor equipment… can all be found but at higher prices.

Though bus operators have fixed price, so it’s possible to buy from there directly. We bought a ticket for Perito Moreno glacier from El calafate in the bus operator office and the price was the regular one.

Connected to the world

There is no connexion at all for mobile data and even mobile service. Even from the main mobile phone operators of Argentina.

Meaning that while there you can even get a phone call.

WIFI

There are Wifi though in most hostel/hotel but in most of them it will be limited to the common area. It’s working fine but don’t except a super quick connexion.

Grocery

There are a few supermarkets where you can find fresh fruits, veggies, coffee, snacks, crackers, breads…

Also, there are many bakeries all around towns.

Restaurants

If you prefer not to cook your meals or don’t have the possibilities, there are tonnes of cool bars and restaurants all over town.

There is a vegan restaurant in town, called “Curcuma”. It’s a bir pricy but really yummy and fresh. Here is the addressJosé Antonio Rojo 219, El Chalten, Santa Cruz, Argentina

Lunch meals

Also, most of the restaurants and bakery can provide lunch boxes for your day hikes if you can’t make them by yourselves.

ATM

There is one ATM located in a bank near the bus terminal.

Things to do

As we stayed 3 nights, we had 2 whole day:

  1. Laguna de Los tres
  2. Lagune Torre
