Introduction
On our road trip through the Balkans, we made a quick stop in Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina. After a full day exploring Dubrovnik, we crossed the border and stayed overnight in this small, charming town before heading north toward Mostar and Sarajevo.
Trebinje is the kind of place that’s perfect for a short stay — calm, walkable, and with enough local character to make it memorable. One of the highlights of our stop was the Kamena kuća – Stone House, a beautiful old stone home where we spent the night. It felt like stepping into a piece of living history. Sadly, it’s no longer available, but you can still find nice accommodations for a really good price.

Getting there
Trebinje is located in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina, just 30 km from Dubrovnik, Croatia. It’s easily accessible by car and makes for a perfect stop if you’re road-tripping through the Balkans.
If you’re coming from Dubrovnik, the drive takes about 45 minutes via the M6/Nevsine route. Make sure to check border crossing times, especially during peak travel season.
There are also buses connecting Dubrovnik to Trebinje, though schedules can be irregular and less reliable. We’d recommend traveling by car for more flexibility, especially if you’re planning to continue toward Mostar or Sarajevo afterward.

We recommend to rent a car through Discover Cars with free cancellation. Book your rental car here.
Moving Around
Once in Trebinje is a small and very walkable town. You can easily explore the old town, local cafés, parks, and main sights on foot.
If you’re driving, there’s plenty of free parking near the city center, especially along the Trebišnjica river. For visiting nearby monasteries or heading further into Bosnia, having a car is definitely a plus. But for a short stay in town, you won’t need to move your vehicle at all., most can be done on foot, but having a car will also be required to visit more comfortably the church and monasteries.

When to Visit
Trebinje is a lovely year-round destination, but the experience changes quite a bit with the seasons. Here’s what to expect throughout the year:
- Spring (March to May): Spring is a great time to visit Trebinje. The temperatures range between 12–24°C (54–75°F), and the surrounding hills start turning green. It’s perfect for exploring the old town, enjoying riverside walks, and visiting the nearby monasteries without the summer heat or crowds.
- Summer (June to August): Expect hot and sunny weather with temperatures between 26–35°C (79–95°F). This is high season, especially for road-trippers crossing from Croatia. Days can get very hot, so early mornings and late evenings are best for sightseeing. Pack light clothes, sunscreen, and drink lots of water.
- Autumn (September to November): Mild temperatures return in autumn, between 15–28°C (59–82°F). It’s still warm and dry enough for outdoor activities, and the changing colors of the vineyards and surrounding hills add extra charm. This is a great time to visit if you want fewer crowds but still good weather.
- Winter (December to February): Winters in Trebinje are quiet and cool, with temperatures from 4–14°C (39–57°F). It’s the low season, so many accommodations are cheaper. While you’ll miss the green scenery, it’s still a calm and authentic time to see the town and enjoy local food.
Our tip: Visit in late spring or early autumn for the most comfortable weather and a peaceful vibe — especially if you’re combining Trebinje with Mostar or Dubrovnik.
