Introduction: 3 Months south america Cost

In our 3 months in South America, we visited Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile. Know that going in different country will also affect the cost a bit. Another thing to take into consideration is the exchange rate that is moving from time to time.

But globally, that will give you an idea.

Type of travel: here it was budget backpacking without suffering (based on our point of view).

Accommodation: we only used Airbnb or booking, and our daily budget for accommodation was 40euros (20 euros each). Also know that as a couple, a double bedroom often cost the same in south America as a bunk bed.

Food: Cook all the meal by yourselves except for rare occasion.

Transportation: As much as possible buses. Plane when really needed.

On top of all of that, we will add in the end, the exchange fees, activities, souvenir, and others.

Total cost

Let’s get you the number straight away. It cost us 9 000€ for 3 months, so a total of 4 500€ per person, so a total of 1 500€ per month per person.

Accommodation

It cost us approx. 3250€ for both of us. Which over 92 days give us an average cost per night of 35€.

There is one main factor to take into consideration is that we went to Torres del Paine W-Trek for 5 days and there we couldn’t avoid paying really expensive accommodation as we booked it last minute.

If we remove the 4 nights we spent there, it would bring the total down to 2655€ for 88 nights, an average cost of 30€ per night.

If we would like to decrease even more the accommodation cost, there would be one way, to travel with a tent and go camping as it is mostly possible in South America.

Transportation

It cost us approx. 2 850€ for both of us. Totally we took 9 planes, 19 buses, 3 cars, 2 speed boats, 1 ferry, 2 vans.

We don’t really think we could lower that cost for a 3 months backpacking trip. The only way would be to travel longer and stay longer in places. That would bring down the average cost.

Food

It cost us approx. 1 200€for both of us. Our diet us plant based, we also like cookies, breads, and enjoy drinking booze.

In order to be able to do so, we always tried to get an accommodation with a kitchen. Also, as we are not party people and enjoy more the day. It did not bother us to get back to the accommodation for dinner.

One way to decrease this amount would be not to drink alcohol, that could save us around 300€.

Others

If you add up, all the amount we gave you, we arrive at 7 300€, the rest is shared between activities (tickets, entrances, special food or accommodation within an activities), exchanges fees (that you can’t avoid because you are changing currency or withdrawing), souvenir and others (healthcare, skincare, and things you forgot to count).
