1st Class Sleeper Train From Hue to Hoi An
In April 2023, we travelled 3 weeks in Vietnam. Our original plan was to visit all of Vietnam but as we were planning it, we decided to focus on the north and center of Vietnam. Therefor allowing more time in both those regions.
Our trip started and ended in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. And we also spent an overnight in Hanoi as we travelled back from Sapa to Halong Bay.
Our complete trip included in this order: Hanoi, Sapa, Hanoi, Halong Bay/LanHa Bay, Tam Coc (Ninh Binh), Hue, HoiAn, Hanoi. And as always, we will make a complete itinerary of the trip.
One thing is that we travelled Vietnam while Tina was 9 to 12-week Pregnant. So, it wasn’t always easy, yet we enjoyed it!
To get to Hoi An, we first took a train to Da Nang which is the closest station to Hoi An. Then we took a taxi that we organized with your hotel for 350 000 Dong as it was even cheaper than on “Grab”
We booked our train tickets 2 days in advance using BaoLau as it is easy to use and chose your seat. There are various seat types depending on the train but mostly there are 2-person cabin, 1st class 4 beds cabin, 2nd class 6 bed cabin and regular seats.
We wanted a new experience, so we opted for the 1st class 4 beds cabin as the 2-person cabin was already sold out. We also wanted to enjoy the view, so we really wanted the lower bed. And we managed to get the last 2 ones!!!

Going from Hue to Hoi An
Let’s start this 1st Class Sleeper Train From Hue to Hoi An article will all the way you have to get to Hoi An:
- By Train: Which will all be explained in this article.
- By Bus: The journey takes 3 to 4 hours and cost around 250 000 per person. Which should be the cheapest option.
- By renting a car or a motorbike: You can rent a vehicle in Hue and drop it in Hoi An, this will allow you to make road trip through this region and to pass through the Hai Van Pass, a 21-kilometer mountain pass offering stunning views of the coastline and surrounding mountains. To reach the pass, head towards An Duong Vuong – Nguyen Tat Thanh and turn left onto the Phuoc Tuong Tunnel.
- By private taxi or car: It takes 2 to 3 hours but this option us much more expensive and up to 2.2 million VND.
- By Sea plane: Apparently, you can also book a seaplane between the 2 cities via Hai Au Aviation but it will cost 3.5million VND.
Booking the trip
Here also, it was super easy, a few days before our trip to Hoi An (2 if I am right), we went online to BaoLou. We opted for that website as it was compreensive and easy to chose our seats or rather bed.
There were multiple options with various prices:
- 2-person cabin (all booked)
- 1st class 4 beds cabin (our option)
- 2nd class 6 bed cabin
- Regular seats.
Also, if you want a cabin all for yourself, you can get 4 tickets.
Step by Step Review
Train Station
Our day begun with some yoga and a breakfast. Once ready we chilled a bit and packed our thighs. We then got a “Grab” from our hotel to the train station for 33 000.
It was a 10min ride to the train station. It is recommended to arrive 30min earlier. As we had the SE1 train to Danang, departure was scheduled at 10h50, we arrived around 10h30. But in our case, the platform opened around 10h40 but the train only arrived at 11h05. So, we just waited in front of the train station as there isn’t really anything there.
At that time, it was pouring and getting to the train was not that easy but fun.
Train
Once onboard, we got to our cabin where there were 4 beds and a small table. Each bed as a set of sheets and blankets. There are two 220V outlet, as well as one USB and one light for each bed. There are small brackets to get to the upper bed as well.
We were lucky to be with a young Vietnamese couple that spoke a bit English and were super friendly. They even made us tried some local fruits that were super bitter. In the past Tina didn’t have such goo experience in sleeper train while we lived in China.
If you want to get the cabin only for yourself, you either have to book well in advance as there are 2-person cabin or to buy 4 tickets and reserve the whole cabin for yourself.
Once the train on route, it was time to make the bed and to start wondering how clean the sheets and blankets are.
Lunch
We then started to relax while admiring through the windows.
And after a few minutes, train staff arrived with a food cart. They had rice with either tofu, pork or chicken. I opted for the tofu option (40 000) and Tina sticked to some peanut butter sandwich.
To be honest, the food was quite good. Later they also came selling yogurts and fruits. It is as this time that our upper neighbor got some small bitter fruit that we got to try.
Carriage
The views were stunning from the train, and we quite enjoyed it. I also went on a small quest and explore our carriage to see how it was. There were semi-automatic doors that you open using a button, on one end a water dispenser and a sink and passed the door the toilet.
Once again to be honest here, the toilets were disgusting and soooooo stinky.
Hai Van Pass
But the most beautiful part was around the Hải Vân Pass. We could see the ocean and it was simply stunning.
During the trip we were wondering how clean the sheets and blankets were. Well, when before arriving at Da Nang, someone came to our cabin to fold the sheets, so that answered our questions and there are not changed after each passenger.
Transfer to Hotel
We arrived around 2pm in Da Nang. For the rest of the road, as explained as the beginning we opted to organized it via our accommodation as it was the cheapest and easiest option.
We right found our driver in the strain station and it was then a 45min drive to our Hotel in Hoi An.
Once there, we checked-in and got to our room.

Final though
