Asia, with 51 recognized countries, 4 dependent territories, and 2 special administrative regions, is an enormous and diverse continent. It encompasses Eastern Asia, which includes countries like China, Japan, Mongolia, and Korea—often what people think of when they hear “Asia”—as well as Southeast Asia, a top destination for travelers worldwide.
With so many distinct cultures and traditions, it can be overwhelming to decide where to begin exploring. For us, we were fortunate to let serendipity guide our journey.
For most travelers, Southeast Asia is the starting point of their adventure, with popular destinations like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia. These countries appeal not only to backpackers but also to standard and luxury travelers, offering something for everyone.
Asia isn’t just home to breathtaking landscapes; it also boasts a rich and diverse cuisine, making it a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds.
About
Asia is Earth’s largest and most populous continent.
It spans an area of approximately 44,579,000 km², accounting for 30% of the planet’s land area and 8.7% of the Earth’s total surface area.
The continent is home to a staggering 4,560,667,108 people, making it the most densely populated region in the world.
Historically, China and India alternated as the largest economies globally from 1 CE to 1800 CE, drawing immense attention from the western world. The famed Silk Road served as the primary trade route, connecting the East and West and fostering cultural and economic exchanges.
What to expect?
Southeast Asia comprises the region south of China, east of India and north west of Australia. It is made of 11 countries, Brunei Cambodia Indonesia Laos Malaysia Myanmar Philippines Singapore Thailand Timor Leste and Vietnam. This vibrant region is renowned for its tropical landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse cuisines, making it a favorite among travelers worldwide.
East Asia is made up of China Japan Mongolia North Korea South Korea Taiwan Hong Kong Macau.
his region is home to some of the world’s most iconic destinations, such as the wild plains of Mongolia, the Great Wall of China, and the timeless traditions of Japan. East Asia offers an incredible mix of ancient history and modern innovation.
South Asia integrate Afghanistan Bangladesh Bhutan India Maldives Nepal Pakistan Sri Lanka.
This region is a treasure trove of impressive cultural heritage, offering unforgettable experiences such as visiting one of the world’s wonders, the Taj Mahal, or trekking to the Everest Base Camp in Nepal.
Central Asia regroup Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. While it is one of the least touristy regions of Asia, it holds immense historical and cultural significance. The Silk Road, which traverses these nations, offers a glimpse into the ancient trade routes that connected East and West. The region is gaining popularity among adventurous travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences.
Western Asia also called the Middle east consist of Armenia Azerbaijan Bahrain Cyprus Egypt (Sinai Peninsula) Georgia Iran Iraq Israel Jordan Kuwait Lebanon Oman Palestine Qatar Saudi Arabia Syria Turkey United Arab Emirates Yemen. This region is home to world-renowned landmarks such as the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and the historic city of Istanbul in Turkey. However, ongoing conflicts in parts of the region mean safety can be a concern, and travelers are advised to research conditions thoroughly before visiting.
