Introduction

Île aux Moines is the largest island in the Gulf of Morbihan, located in western France in the heart of Brittany. Steeped in history and natural charm, the island has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and you can still find ancient dolmens scattered across its landscape.

We visited Île aux Moines as a day trip and explored it by bike, which turned out to be the perfect way to take in its scenic beauty. Peaceful coastal roads, shaded paths, and hidden beaches made the experience unforgettable. That said, spending a night on the island could be just as magical—giving you a chance to enjoy the quiet atmosphere once the day-trippers leave.

Whether you’re up for a relaxing ride, a hike along the GR34 loop trail, or simply looking for a tranquil break by the sea, Île aux Moines is a wonderful escape into nature.

Getting there

The easiest way to reach Île aux Moines is by taking a short ferry ride from Port-Blanc in Baden. The journey takes just 5 minutes, making it one of the most convenient island escapes in Brittany. The ferry is operated by Izenah Croisières, which runs frequent departures all year round.

Ferry Schedule:

  • October to March: 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM (every 30 minutes)
  • April to June & September: 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM (every 30 minutes)
  • 1 July to 31 August: 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM (every 15 minutes)
  • Sundays and public holidays: First departure at 8:00 AM (9:00 AM on New Year’s Day)
  • Tickets:

The round-trip fare is €5.50, and you can easily buy your ticket on the spot at the Port-Blanc terminal before boarding.

Getting to the Ferry Terminal:

The best option is to arrive by car. There’s a designated parking area right in front of the port (P1)—costing around €9 for 7 hours. If you’re coming from nearby Baden, a free shuttle runs from the town center (Bourg) to Port-Blanc for added convenience.

Moving Around

There are no cars on Île aux Moines, which makes exploring the island even more peaceful and enjoyable. The best way to get around is either on foot or by bike.

If you enjoy walking or hiking, the island is home to the GR34 coastal trail, which loops around the entire island. It’s a 17 km route that takes around 4.5 hours to complete and offers beautiful views of the sea, quiet coves, and lush greenery along the way. Be sure to check the map of the island.

Alternatively, right after stepping off the ferry, you’ll find bike rental shops ready to get you rolling. We personally rented our bikes from the shop just to the right of the Tourism Office. The bikes were in great condition and very comfortable.

Rental prices:

  • €10 for 5 hours
  • €12 for the whole day

Cycling is definitely the easiest and most fun way to see the entire island in a day!

When to Visit

Île aux Moines is a great destination from spring through early autumn, with each season offering something different depending on what you’re looking for.

  • Spring (March to May): This is a lovely time to visit as Ile aux Moines begins to bloom. Wildflowers cover the countryside, and temperatures range from 10°C to 18°C, making it ideal for hiking or cycling in cooler weather. It’s also much quieter before the summer crowds arrive.
  • Summer (June to August): The peak season for Île aux Moines. Expect long sunny days, lively atmosphere, and sea temperatures warm enough for swimming. Daily highs range between 20°C and 27°C. This is the best time if you’re after beach time and bustling cafés—but be ready for more visitors.
  • Autumn (September to October): A peaceful time to enjoy Ile aux Moines with fewer tourists and mild temperatures between 13°C and 20°C. The weather is still good for outdoor activities, and the landscape turns golden, perfect for photography or slower-paced exploring.
  • Winter (November to February): While the island stays open, winter is quiet and many services close. Temperatures drop to around 5°C to 10°C, and ferries run less frequently. It’s best suited for those looking for solitude and bracing coastal walks.

Our tip: Visit in late spring or early autumn for the perfect mix of good weather, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed local vibe.

Where to Stay

If you’re planning to visit Île aux Moines, basing yourself in Vannes is a smart choice. This charming Breton city is only a short drive from Port Blanc, where the ferry departs to the island. Vannes offers a delightful mix of medieval streets, half-timbered houses, vibrant markets, and a lively harbor. Whether you’re after comfort, charm, or a luxury spa retreat, here are some of the best places to stay in Vannes:

(€) Kyriad Prestige Vannes Centre-Palais des Arts – A reliable and modern option within walking distance to the city center. Comfortable rooms and convenient parking make it great for road-trippers.

(€€) Hôtel & Spa Le Maury, Vannes, The Originals Boutique – This boutique hotel blends style and relaxation, featuring a wellness area and elegant rooms, perfect for couples or those wanting a relaxing stay.

What to Eat

For the best experience, we strongly recommend bringing your own picnic to Île aux Moines. While there are a couple of restaurants and cafés near the main port, options are limited—especially if you plan to explore the more remote parts of the island.

There’s also a small supermarket in the village center, but it’s best for basic supplies or last-minute snacks rather than a full meal.

Packing a fresh picnic with local Breton specialties—think crepes, cider, baguette sandwiches, and a sweet treat—is the perfect way to enjoy lunch by the sea or along one of the scenic trails. Don’t forget water and sunscreen if you’re visiting in the warmer months!

Île aux Moines One-Day Bike Itinerary

ou’ll need to choose between walking the full coastal trail or renting a bike—you can’t do both in one day, and bikes are not allowed on the GR34 trail. We opted to explore the island by bike, even if we didn’t always follow the official paths strictly.

Here’s how our day to Ile aux Moines unfolded:

  • 10:00 AM – Arrived on the island and rented our bikes
  • Followed the Yellow Circuit to Pointe du Trec’h
  • Then followed the Red Circuit to reach Pointe de Brouel
  • Headed to Plage du Vran for a well-deserved lunch break and early afternoon swim – a peaceful and secluded spot
  • Quick stop at Plage du Gored just to check out the view
  • Visited the charming Fontaine de Kerno
  • Continued to Plage Le Rudel (short stop just to see)
  • Took a break and relaxed at Plage de la Pointe de Brannec – one of the most stunning spots on the island
  • Final stop at Dolmen Er Boglieux to discover some island history
  • Returned to the port and caught the 3:30 PM ferry back to the mainland

This route gave us a great taste of the island’s peaceful atmosphere, its hidden beaches, and its natural beauty—all without rushing.
