Introduction
Tønsberg, located southwest of Oslo along the western shores of the Oslofjord, is one of Norway’s most historic cities—and the oldest according to the sagas. With just over 42,000 inhabitants, it’s the largest town in the Vestfold region but still keeps a charming, small-town feel.
Founded by the Vikings in the 9th century, Tønsberg has a long and fascinating past. You’ll find traces of it on Castle Mountain, where the ruins of Castrum Tunsbergis—Norway’s largest medieval castle—once stood proudly in the 13th century. Today, the fortress remains a must-see viewpoint over the fjord.
The town is also famous for the Oseberg Mound, the site where one of the world’s most beautiful Viking ships was unearthed. And if you’re around in July, don’t miss the city’s popular outdoor music festival that brings life and sound to its historical backdrop.
We found ourselves in Tønsberg thanks to a lovely coincidence — the dad from Tina’s au pair family in the U.S. was originally from there. So we made a stop to discover this historic town and see where it all started for him. It turned out to be more than just a personal detour — Tønsberg is full of charm, rich Viking history, and a laid-back coastal vibe that we really enjoyed.
