Introduction
Zlatibor is a region and mountain village in western Serbia, loved by locals as a year-round escape. Whether for hiking, skiing, or just getting fresh mountain air, it’s one of the country’s most popular destinations — and also a major stop for those heading south to Montenegro.
Zlatibor is especially known for its health tourism, the world’s longest panoramic gondola lift, and that unique mountain vibe where time slows down. With only about 3,000 permanent residents, the village feels calm and small — though during holidays it gets lively as Serbs gather in their weekend homes.
Even Tito, the former Yugoslav president, had a villa here. You can still see its remnants near a hotel bearing his name.
But for us, Zlatibor is more than just a travel destination. It’s Tina’s hometown, where we go as often as we can to visit family. It’s the kind of place where people leave their cars unlocked, and everyone knows everyone. It’s also where we spent time with our son Poppy — a memory that makes this place forever part of our story.

Getting there
Zlatibor is well connected by road and rail, making it a convenient stop whether you’re traveling from within Serbia or coming from neighboring countries.
- By car: The easiest and most flexible way to get to Zlatibor is by car. From Belgrade, it takes around 3.5 to 4 hours (230 km) via the A2 highway, which is modern and in great condition. If you’re coming from Montenegro or Bosnia, expect scenic but more winding roads.
- By bus: There are regular bus connections from major Serbian cities like Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, and Užice. The journey from Belgrade takes about 5 hours. The central bus station in Zlatibor is right in the heart of the town, close to hotels and restaurants.
- By train: Zlatibor is also served by the Belgrade–Bar railway line. The train stops in Užice, the nearest city (30 minutes from Zlatibor by car or local bus). From Užice, you can easily catch a local bus or taxi.
- By plane: The closest airport is Niš Constantine the Great Airport (about 3.5 hours away), followed by Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (about 4 hours). From there, you’ll need to drive or take a bus.
Tip: If you’re planning to explore the region (like Tara National Park or Sirogojno), renting a car is your best option for flexibility and ease.

Moving Around
Zlatibor is a small village, so moving around is easy — and often very enjoyable.
- On foot: The center of Zlatibor is walkable, and that’s the best way to experience its charm. You can stroll from the lake to the market, pass by cafés, and reach restaurants, shops, and attractions like the Adventure Park or the starting point of the gondola.
- By car: If you want to explore the surrounding region — like visiting Stopića Cave, the open-air museum of Sirogojno, or Tara National Park — having a car is ideal. Roads are in good condition and the signage is generally clear.
- By taxi: Taxis are available and reasonably priced for short distances. You can easily get a ride from the center to nearby sights if you don’t have a car.
- By bike or e-scooter: During warmer months, renting a bike or e-scooter is a fun way to move around and cover a bit more ground, especially if you’re staying slightly outside the center.
Tip: If you’re visiting during snowy months, some mountain roads can be icy or closed. It’s best to check local conditions if you’re driving yourself.

When to Visit
Zlatibor is a true year-round destination, and each season offers something different depending on what you’re after. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
- Spring (March to May): Spring is when Zlatibor starts waking up from the winter. The fields get greener, flowers bloom, and the air feels fresh. It’s a great time for peaceful walks and light hikes. Temperatures range from 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F). Trails are less busy and the atmosphere feels very local.
- Summer (June to August): This is high season. Locals from all over Serbia (and beyond) come to enjoy the fresh mountain air and escape the heat of the cities. Days are sunny, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, horse riding, and lake swimming. Temperatures average between 15°C and 28°C (59°F to 82°F). It can get crowded, but still laid-back compared to coastal destinations.
- Autumn (September to November): One of the most beautiful times to visit if you love nature. The region glows with golden and red tones. The weather stays pleasant in September (10°C to 22°C / 50°F to 72°F), then gradually cools down. It’s the best season for photographers, mushroom pickers, and those looking for quiet.
- Winter (December to February): If you’re into skiing or snow-covered landscapes, this is your moment. Zlatibor becomes a popular winter destination with ski slopes and winter events. Expect temperatures between -5°C and 5°C (23°F to 41°F). Snow can be abundant, especially in January. It’s also a great time to enjoy hearty Serbian mountain food.
Our tip: Pick your season based on your interests — summer for lake swims and festivals, autumn for colors and calm, or winter for skiing and cozy vibes.

What to Eat
Here’s what to eat in Zlatibor if you want to experience real Serbian flavors. Just a heads up — most of these are meat-heavy and not very plant-based-friendly, unless you’re cooking at home or hunting down specific spots.
- Sarma: Stuffed cabbage leaves filled with minced meat, rice or bulgur, and simmered in tomato sauce with lots of spices. A cold-weather comfort food.
- Burek: A classic pie, usually filled with cheese, potatoes, or meat. You’ll find it in every bakery, hot and greasy.
- Punjena Paprika: Bell peppers stuffed with meat and rice in a tomato-based sauce. A staple of Serbian home cooking.
- Zlatiborska pršuta: This dry-cured ham is a local specialty from Zlatibor — salty, smoky, and usually enjoyed with cheese and bread.
- Kajmak: A thick, rich cream that’s usually spread on warm bread or added to grilled meats.
- Komplet lepinja: A full-fat breakfast bomb. Flatbread filled with kajmak, egg, and often bits of roasted meat.
- Cvarci: Pork cracklings — deep-fried bits of pork fat. Crunchy and salty, served as a snack or part of a platter.
- Rakija: Serbia’s national spirit. Try the plum one (šljivovica) or go for quince, pear, or grape if you’re feeling adventurous.
- Turkish coffee: Served strong and unfiltered, usually with a glass of water. It’s the proper way to end a traditional meal in Zlatibor.
If you follow a plant-based diet, your best bet will be to cook at home or find restaurants that offer more international option
