Uruguay is a one of a kind type country. It is a chill and layback country with great vibes all around.

People are not stressed, and you feel it around you. We spent 10 days travelling in Uruguay from North to South following the coast.

We discovered amazing place and people. And had the chance to live a real local barbecue

The barbecue is made slowly. On one side there is the fire to made ember and on the other a grill for the meat. Slowly ember is put under the fire for 2h to have a slow cooking of the meat.

Uruguay is a small country of South America with about 3,5 million inhabitants.

90% of Uruguayan are from Spanish and Italian. There isn’t lots of Indians still alive. 44% of the population is Catholic and the rest without religion.

Uruguay didn’t become independent on its own will but by choice of Argentina, Brazil and India.

They go everywhere with a 2L hot water bottle and a small pot full of Mate herbs. That way they can drink it all day long.

Uruguay has 3 times more cow than human inhabitants. Uruguay has around 12 million cows and is exporting all over the world.

It is one of the countries where meat is the most eaten. No wonder that local dish is barbecue.

What to expect?

Language: The official language is Spanish. And English is also widely known from Uruguayan.

Food: With that many cows, most of the local dish are made of meat. Of course, some vegetable can be found. But after the BBQ, other common dish are Chivito (meat sandwich) and tortas Fritas (fried pancake).

Transportation: Uruguay is a small country. We cross it from north to south by buses. They are often comfortable and new. The distances are not that big so you won’t spend all day long on a bus.

Money: The currency in Uruguay is the pesos. Rates changes, but at the time we were there 1€ was worth 48 Pesos. Cash is the best thing to have around. ATM can be found everywhere in Montevideo or Shui (Border with brazil). In smaller city, there isn’t many ATM and it can be tricky to get cash. In Punta del diablo, Brazil BRL can be used.

Plugs: The plugs in Uruguay are type C (Euro). The standard voltage is 220V with a frequency of 50hz.

Safety: Uruguay is safe country for all type of travellers, and people really welcoming. There even homeless want to help you without anything in return.
