Introduction

Lucerne is located in German Switzerland. It is an 82 000 inhabitant’s city sitting on the stunning lake Lucerne and surrounded by beautiful Alps Mountains.

It is the most popular town in central Switzerland and a nexus of economics, transportation, culture, and media in the region.

Lucerne is a great place to be and spend 3-4 days to relax and reunite with nature.

Mapping the day

Getting there

The easiest way to get to Lucerne is by train. To do so, you can first flight to one of the nearby cities like Zurich or Berne and then take a train there.

But you could also get there by car which would be the best way to really enjoy the city and Switzerland.

Moving Around

Moving Around Lucerne is super easy. The public transportation rocks! There are lots of buses and BRT line that can bring you everywhere. To know the direction Google map will tell you which connection and line to take.

There are also lots of trains that you can take to get around. For instance, to get to Alpnachstad (steepest cog railway in the world, going to Mount Pilatus), there are various train from Lucerne.

But you could also get on a boat. In fact, tons of ships are running as taxi on lake Lucerne to get you to many destinations around the lake.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Lucerne for hikers would be June and September, out of the peak season of July/August.

But the city can be visited all year round. And the scenery will change. Instead of hiking, you could snow hike.

What to Eat

Some of the best food in Switzerland is going to be Cheese. With all the cows in the mountain pastures, Switzerland has some really good cheese. But local goat cheese is also really yummy!

Another dish could be the Rösti, the former farmers’ breakfast is a crispy fried potato.

Things to do in Lucerne

Historic city center

Get lost in the small old city center and discover a Medieval place dating from the 14th century.

Chapel Bridge

Cross the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), a 34.5m wooden bridge crossing diagonally the river Reuss to connect the city. The bridge is unique and contain inner paintings and arts. It is also the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe, as well as the world’s oldest surviving truss bridge.

Spreuer Bridge

The second wooden covered bridge of Lucerne. Built in the 14th century after the Chapel bridge. A third bridge existed but was demolish in the 19th century.

Jesuit Church, Lucerne

Visit the Catholic church and discover the first large Baroque church built in Switzerland north of the Alps. Founded in 1534.

Church of St. Leodegar

Or Hofkirche St. Leodegar is a Roman catholic Church built in 1639 on the foundation of an original Roman basilica which had burnt in 1633

Lion Monument

Also known as the Lion of Lucerne is a commemoration to the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution.

Ramparts Walk

Called Musegg Wall and its nine towers was erected in the 14th century to fortify the city. Today, you can walk on its ramparts and get on top of the clock tower in its center.

Clocktower

Known as Zytturm, it is part of old wall. Built in the 15th century. It is the only tower of the wall that does not serve a defensive purpose.

Lake walk

An amazing and easy walk to do is from Lucerne city center till Lido and back. The views of the lake are gorgeous, the shade of the trees is protecting, and bench are all along to rest.

Things to do around Lucerne

Mount Pilatus

Take the steepest cog railway, the cable car gondola or hike on top of the highest summit near Lucerne and get some breath-taking views of the lake.

Mount Rigi

Another great mount to visit is Mount Rigi, the second tallest after Pilatus. Known as the Queen of Mountains.

Road trip the lake

Roll on, and drive all around the lake to discover all its beauty in a one daytrip: 

  • Bürgenstock: The complex is made of an amazing hotel with a dedicated cog railway and an observation tower with restaurant. You can hike up there or simply walk to it to have panorama over the lake.
  • Rütli: Is a mountain meadow on the lake. It is said to be the birthplace of Switzerland. It can be reach by hiking or boats. The hilltop behind it offer great views of the lake too.
  • Meggenhorn: Visit the 1870’s castle and its stunning park. The castle can only be visited inside on special time but is completely worth going for a stroll around.
