Introduction

Punta del Diablo is before all a fisherman village. In 1935, The Rocha family immigrated to Punta del Diablo because one of their sons was suffering from Asthma and it has been recommended to him to be close the ocean. So, the family moved and built their ranch there. Therefor becoming the first inhabitant of Punta del Diablo. Later around 1942, fishermen from Valizas began to arrive on a temporary basis, as they saw a profitable business in shark fishing since oil was extracted from the liver and later exported. Without access or walking path, the only way to get there was by car, which was difficult because the tracks in the sand dunes were erased by the wind.

In 1949, a hostel called “Hostería del Pescador” and a road were built.

The wives of the fishermen, began to make crafts with local materials (snails and starfish, stones, wood, ceramics, etc.). With time and the arrival of tourists, a craft fair was created.

The original names of the town were “Aldea del Mar” and “Santa Teresa de la Coronilla”. In the mid-twentieth century it was called “Cerro de Los Pescadores de la Punta del Diablo” because many of the fishermen from Valizas came from that region.

The weather in January (time of our trip) was both rainy and sunny. But also, the beaches near the village are windy making it perfect for surfing but not as much to chill on them.
