Slovenia
Here is what you need to know : Slovenia Travel Guide
Slovenia is true hidden gem sitting on the foot of the Julian Alps. Most of the country is covered mountains and forest making a perfect destination for people looking to reset with nature.
And yet the country has a small littoral, so you can even go sea side in Slovenia.
Another cool things about Slovenia is its vast history and in how many different empire it has been.
We spent a bit less than a week there on a road trip and we LOVED it.
About
Slovenia is small country located in central Europe and is officially called the Republic of Slovenija.
Its population is 2.1 millions inhabitants, of which 500 000 live in the capital city, Ljubjana.
Slovenia has historically been the crossroads of Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages and cultures. It has been part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Carolingian Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, the Kingdom of Hungary, the Republic of Venice, the Illyrian Provinces, the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary
The colors and the motifs on the flag represent the country’s rich history. The three gold stars come from the coat of arms of the Celje family, who was hugely influential in the medieval era in the region. The coat of arms shows Slovenia’s mountains and ocean coast. The colours are Pan-Slavic. The mountains represented by the white colour are Alps, and the wavy blue lines across the bottom indicate Slovenia’s valuable access to the sea.
Ljubjana, city of Dragon
Or so is the legend. The dragon is the symbol of the city. Legend as it that a Dragon nest was present in the source of the Ljubljanica (the river passing in the city).
More than 500 brown bears live in the forests
If you are an animal lover, you’ll be happy to know that over 500 brown bears roam the Slovenian forests.
But don’t worry, the diet of these bears are mostly vegetarian and they rarely hunt since there are plenty of other foods to gather.
Slovenia has over 90.000 beekeepers
With over 2 million people, it’s quite fascinating that about 90.000 Slovenes are beekeepers.
Honey is definitely a delicacy here, and if you have the chance you should both taste and buy some home for your family and friends.
