Introduction
Hey everyone! In this article, we’re sharing the best things to do in Mirissa. In April 2024, we spent two weeks traveling through Sri Lanka. After a memorable safari in Yala National Park, we headed two nights in Mirissa—a charming beach town that quickly became one of our favorites. While two nights gave us enough time to explore the main highlights, we definitely wouldn’t have minded a third night to slow down and soak it all in.
Mirissa stood out as our favorite beach destination in Sri Lanka. We absolutely loved the laid-back vibe, the balance of things to do without the overwhelming crowds, and the amazing food spots tucked all around town.
In this post, we’ll take you through our favorite experiences and must-dos in Mirissa—from stunning viewpoints to hidden beach gems. So if you’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka and wondering what to do in Mirissa, let’s dive in!

Getting there
Getting to Mirissa is quite easy, whether you’re coming from the east (Tissamaharama/Yala) or from elsewhere along the southern coast.
- From Tissamaharama / Yala National Park: If you’re coming from Tissamaharama, the easiest and most convenient way is to hire a private driver. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. We recommend asking your accommodation to organize the transfer—they’ll usually offer the best rates, and it saves you the hassle of negotiating on your own.
- By Bus (Budget-Friendly Option): If you’re traveling on a budget and have time, you can also take public transportation, though the journey takes up to 4 hours and includes a transfer:
- Head to the Tissamaharama bus station.
- Take bus 334 toward Matara.
- In Matara, take bus 350 towards Udupila.
- From Udupila, either walk or take a tuk-tuk to your accommodation in Mirissa (5–10 minutes).
- From Colombo or Galle (Or Unawatuna) (By Train + Tuk-tuk): If you’re coming from Colombo or Galle (Unawatuna), the train is a scenic and affordable option: Take the southern coastal train and get off at Weligama Station, which is the closest stop to Mirissa. Or from Weligama, it’s a 10–15 minute tuk-tuk ride to Mirissa.

Moving Around
The best way to get around Mirissa is by scooter. We rented one directly from our accommodation, and it couldn’t have been easier. With a scooter, you’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace, whether it’s chasing sunsets, heading to hidden beaches, or grabbing food a bit further out. It’s also a budget-friendly option, often cheaper than relying on tuk-tuks for every trip.
Of course, tuk-tuks are still widely available and convenient for shorter distances or if you don’t feel comfortable riding a scooter. We recommend asking your guesthouse or hotel to arrange a tuk-tuk for you—this way, you’ll know the rate in advance and avoid the hassle of negotiating on the street.
Either way, getting around Mirissa is simple, and the town is small enough that you’re never too far from the beach.

When to Visit
The best time to visit Mirissa depends on the type of experience you’re looking for. From sunny beach days to quieter off-season escapes, each season offers something different.
- Dry Season (December – April): Best for Beaches & Whale Watching: This is the ideal time to visit Mirissa, with sunny skies, calm seas, and little to no rain. It’s perfect for relaxing on the beach, swimming, surfing, and whale watching, which is at its peak between December and March. Expect warm temperatures (28–32°C / 82–90°F) and more tourists, especially around Christmas and New Year.
- Shoulder Season (May – June & October – November): Quieter & Greener: These months bring a mix of sunshine and occasional short rains. The sea can be rough at times, but the area is lush and less crowded. If you don’t mind a few showers, it’s a great time to enjoy Mirissa at a more relaxed pace and lower prices.
- Monsoon Season (July – September): Rainy & Rough Seas: This is the wettest period in Mirissa, with frequent rain and rough seas, which often cancel water activities like whale watching and boat tours. While it’s the least popular time to visit, some travelers enjoy the quiet, off-season vibe—just be prepared for unpredictable weather.
Best months to visit: January to March for perfect beach days and whale watching. We visited in April, and it was still dry, warm, and absolutely beautiful.

Best things to do in Mirissa
Coconut Tree Hill – The Iconic Mirissa Viewpoint
Coconut Tree Hill is without a doubt one of the most famous spots in Mirissa—and easily one of the best things to do in the area. It gained popularity thanks to social media, and for good reason: the palm-covered hilltop overlooking the ocean is simply stunning.
The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the crowds are smaller and the light is perfect for photos. Whether you’re coming for the Instagram-worthy shot or just to relax and take in the view, Coconut Tree Hill is a must-see while in Mirissa.

Turtle Beach
Just a short walk down from Coconut Tree Hill is Turtle Beach, also known as Turtle Point—easily one of the top things to do in Mirissa and a close second to the famous palm-covered hill.
This beach is a must-visit spot for snorkeling, especially if you want the chance to swim with sea turtles. If you don’t have your own gear, masks and snorkels are available to rent directly on the beach.
To increase your chances of spotting turtles, it’s best to ask locals where they’ve been seen, or simply follow the crowd. That’s exactly what we did—and within five minutes, we had the unforgettable experience of swimming alongside two beautiful sea turtles.

Parot Rock
Parot rock is a stunning place in Mirissa, this elevated lookout on top of a large rock offers nice views of Mirissa Beach and the ocean. We went there early morning during low tide, and it was great and not crowded. Be sure to follow the line to reach it and not the rocks.

Mirissa beach
Mirissa Beach, located right next to Parrot Rock, is one of the longest and most scenic beaches in the area. With its soft golden sand, gentle waves, and palm-lined backdrop, it’s an ideal spot to relax, swim, or simply soak up the sun.
We especially loved taking a peaceful morning walk along the shoreline before the heat and crowds arrived. It’s the perfect way to start your day in Mirissa—calm, quiet, and incredibly beautiful. Whether you’re into beach lounging or long barefoot strolls, Mirissa Beach won’t disappoint.

Tip: We never travel without our DJI Mini 3 PRO drone anymore — it’s totally worth having to capture places from a whole new perspective.
Secret Beach
Despite its name, Secret Beach in Mirissa isn’t so secret anymore—but it’s still one of the coziest and most peaceful beaches in the area. Tucked away from the main stretch, this small, sheltered cove offers a more laid-back atmosphere with fewer crowds, especially during the day.
One of the highlights here is a natural rock pool that provides a safe spot for swimming, protected from the stronger ocean waves. It’s also a great place to watch the sunset on a clear day, with the sky lighting up beautifully over the water.

SPA Ceylon
We stumbled upon Spa Ceylon during our time in Mirissa and were instantly drawn in by the shop’s vibrant colors and calming atmosphere. This beautifully curated store offers a wide range of natural and cruelty-free wellness products, rooted in the traditions of Ayurveda.
From essential oils and herbal balms to skincare and relaxation blends, everything is made with powerful Ayurvedic WonderHerbs designed to nourish your mind, body, and soul.
It quickly became our go-to spot for souvenirs, and that’s exactly why we’re including it on our list of the best things to do in Mirissa. If you’re looking for something meaningful and wellness-focused to take home, Spa Ceylon is the perfect place to shop—and simply stepping inside feels like a treat in itself.

Cooking Class
One of the more unique and enriching things you can do in Mirissa is to join a local cooking class. If, like us, you’ve fallen in love with Sri Lankan cuisine, this is the perfect opportunity to learn how to recreate your favorite dishes at home.
Cooking classes usually include a visit to the local market, an introduction to traditional spices, and hands-on preparation of classic recipes like dhal curry, coconut sambal, or vegetable kotu. It’s a fun and flavorful way to connect with the culture, support local families or small businesses, and bring home more than just memories—real homemade recipes you’ll want to recreate again and again.

Turtle Hatchery
On our way from Mirissa to Unawatuna, we made a stop at a turtle hatchery, curious to see what these places were really about—especially after reading mixed reviews online.
The hatchery we visited turned out to be a positive and educational experience. We learned a lot about Sri Lanka’s sea turtle species, their life cycles, and the threats they face in the wild. From a regular traveler’s perspective, the turtles seemed well cared for, and it was clear that the center played a role in protecting hatchlings and releasing them into the ocean.
While opinions on these hatcheries vary, we felt that this particular one was making a difference. If you’re interested in marine life or conservation, it’s a worthwhile and informative stop—especially when done thoughtfully.

Watch the Giant Bat
One of the best things to do in Mirissa, and something we personally loved, was simply enjoying the swimming pool at our accommodation. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring—peaceful, refreshing, and full of charm.
We spent hours there, sipping on giant coconuts, watching chipmunks dart through the trees, spotting peacocks in the garden, and even catching glimpses of giant bats flying overhead at night. It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best moments while traveling are the quiet, unexpected ones—like lounging poolside, surrounded by nature.

Whale Watching Tour
Whale watching is one of the most popular things to do in Mirissa, and for good reason—this coastal town is one of the best places in the world to spot blue whales!
Tours usually depart early in the morning, around 6:00 AM, to take advantage of the calm sea and increase the chances of sightings. Most trips last between 3 to 5 hours, depending on how far the whales are that day. Along the way, you might also see dolphins, turtles, and even sperm whales if you’re lucky.
Make sure to choose a responsible tour operator that prioritizes marine life and follows ethical practices. Boats can get crowded, so book in advance and try to sit on the upper deck for the best views.
If the sea conditions are right, this experience can be truly unforgettable—there’s nothing quite like watching a massive blue whale break the surface just meters from your boat.
Next Stop: Unawatuna & Galle
After our time in Mirissa, we continued up the coast to Unawatuna, another amazing beach destination with a totally different vibe. If you’re following a similar route, check out our full guide on the best things to do in Unawatuna!
And Unwatuna is also where Galle Fort is located, one of the most visited location in Sri-Lanka
