Exchange Money in Morocco

In November 2022, we made a 16-day Road trip in Morocco going all around and driving over 2 500 km (in a Fiat 500! What an adventure).

Our trip started and ended in Fes, and we made a loop in order to visit this magnificent country. Our itinerary went through the main cities, the Sahara Desert, the seaside and the mountains of Morocco.

As we are based in France, we only had Euros and French debit cards when arriving in Morocco. So, we tried a few ways to get local currency.

In this article, we will tell you what we found out. Then let’s start this Best Way to Exchange Money in Morocco

Here is our complete video from this trip :

Exchange Money in Morocco

Morocco Currency

The currency in Morocco is called the dirham. One dirham is made up of 100 of santim. Dirhams are the official Moroccan currency since 1882. As of November 2022, the average exchange rate was 1€ for 10.6 dh.

ATM

ATM was the first solution we tried out. As we didn’t have any local money and arrived late in the airport, we took some money out of the ATM there.

We took out 500 dh, there was a 35dh fee from the ATM which represented 49.80€. On top of that we got a 4.55€ fee from our bank. Which makes a rate of 1€ for 9.84dh.

Later on, we looked for an ATM that weren’t charging us the 35dh fee. We found that Attijariwafa didn’t have that fee. As an example, we withdrew 378.92€ and got a 9.00€ fee from our bank. But at least it didn’t have the ATM fee. With that we got 4000Mad which makes a rate of 1€ for 10.33dh.

Cash

Ultimately, the best option is to exchange cash in Morocco. We didn’t bring enough, so we had to withdrew.

There are tons of place to exchange money in Morocco. Especially in the main cities. So, it is super easy and most of them have the same exchange rate. So, you don’t need to go all over the city the find the best place.

All the Euros, we exchange there directly were at a rate of 1€ for 10.5dh in Fes, and then the rest of the country 1€ for 10.6dh. This was the best deal we found in Morocco.

One thing to be caution about is the type of currency you bring.  While waiting for our turn in a exchange office in Marrakech, the people in front of us couldn’t exchange their money. They had Scottish pounds which isn’t accepted in Morocco. Only the British pounds are. Meaning that only the main currencies are accepted.
