Introduction

March is one of those months when everything starts to get better. Winter is starting to loosen its grip, spring is around the corner, and travel feels a little easier. It’s not peak season in many places, but conditions are often close to ideal, which reflects on the best places to visit in March.

For us, March has often been the beginning of new adventures after busy winter travels or heading somewhere warm without the crowds of high season. It’s a month where the shoulder season really is at its beginning, especially if you enjoy good weather without peak prices or packed sights.

When people look for where to travel in March, they’re usually after some fresh ideas. Warm enough to enjoy being outside, but not overwhelmingly hot. Busy enough to feel alive, but not exhausting. March delivers that in many destinations.

Another reason March works so well is flexibility. Depending on where you go, it can feel like early spring, late summer, or the tail end of dry season. That makes it one of the easiest months to adapt to your travel style, whether you’re after beaches, nature, or culture.

As always, this guide only includes the best places to visit in March that we’ve personally visited. These are destinations that genuinely worked for us in March, with weather, activities, and overall atmosphere that made travel feel smooth and enjoyable.

How to choose where to travel in March

Choosing the best places to visit in March is all about timing. It’s that moment between seasons where a destination can either feel perfect or just a bit too early or too late. Choosing where to travel in March is less about chasing extremes and more about finding the right place.

The weather is usually the main driver. March is a great month if you want warm temperatures without the intensity of peak summer heat. Many destinations are still enjoying dry season conditions, while others are just starting to warm up after winter. That makes March ideal for being outdoors, walking a lot, and mixing sightseeing with tranquil days.

There are usually fewer crowds in the best places to visit in March, which is a big plus. In many places, high season starts to fade, especially after February. That means fewer people, easier logistics, and often better accommodation prices. If you like travelling without feeling rushed or surrounded by tour groups, March is a very comfortable month.

Budget-wise, March often sits in a sweet spot. Flights are usually cheaper than during peak winter escapes, and prices haven’t yet climbed to summer levels. It’s a good month to stretch your budget a bit further without compromising on experience.

March is also a good time to think about pace. It’s a month that works well for slow travel, road trips, or destinations where you want to settle in rather than move every two days. Whether that’s beaches, countryside, or cities, March rewards a more relaxed approach.

Once you decide on the kind of rhythm you want, choosing where to travel in March becomes much easier. Some destinations shine because the weather is just right, others because they finally feel calm again.

Weather in March: what to realistically expect

March is one of those months where the weather starts working in your favour in most of the best places to visit in March. It’s not quite spring everywhere, but it’s far more comfortable than the deep winter months, and that makes travel feel easier.

In many warm destinations, March is still part of the dry season. Temperatures are pleasant, humidity is low, and days are ideal for being outside. It’s often the last great window before heat or rain starts to build up later in the year, which is why March can be such a strong choice if you’re looking for the best places to visit in March.

In Europe, March marks the slow transition out of winter. Southern regions start to warm up, days get longer, and cities feel more alive again without being crowded. It’s not beach season yet, but it’s perfect for sightseeing, hiking, and road trips without the pressure of peak season.

March can also be a good month for nature-focused travel. Landscapes start to change, colours return, and popular outdoor spots feel quieter than they will just a few weeks later. The weather is generally stable enough to plan ahead, but still varied enough to keep things interesting.

Of course, conditions can vary widely depending on where you go. Some places are already edging towards hotter days, while others are only just waking up from winter. That’s why March is less about chasing a specific temperature and more about choosing a destination that fits the season.

Once you understand that, it becomes clear why those best places to visit in March are so comfortable and flexible to travel.

Vietnam

March is one of the best months to visit Vietnam, especially if you want to explore more than one region. The weather is generally dry, temperatures are comfortable, and travelling feels smooth.

In the north, around Hanoi or SaPa expect cooler days around 18–23°C (64–73°F), while central and southern regions with Hue or Hoi An sit closer to 25–30°C (77–86°F). This makes March ideal for combining cities, countryside, and coastal areas in one trip.

Is March a good month to travel?

Yes, it’s one of the most comfortable months to travel, even if there are only a few best places to travel in March.

March sits right in that sweet spot between seasons. In many destinations, you get the benefits of dry weather and warm temperatures without the intensity of peak heat or peak crowds. That alone makes March a strong contender if you’re wondering where to travel in March.

It’s also a great month for variety. You can enjoy tropical destinations before the rainy season arrives, explore countries that are just starting to warm up, or move around more freely without extreme weather getting in the way. March works especially well for longer trips, where you want consistency without boredom.

Another big advantage of March is pace. Many places are calmer, prices are often more reasonable than in peak winter months, and travel logistics tend to be smoother. It’s a month that rewards slow travel, flexible itineraries, and time spent outdoors.

Of course, not every destination is perfect in March, but when you choose a place that matches the season, it’s hard to go wrong. Follow the weather, avoid forcing a destination too early or too late, and March can easily become one of the best months of the year to travel.
