Hungary is a beautiful country to visit. And is probably one of the top destination for Europeans. Especially with Budapest its capital.
We didn’t spend too much time there and only had the chance to visit Budapest on the end of a road trip but it was enough to made us want to go back.
Budapest was an amazing capital and we would love to see more of the country side.
About
Hungary is a landlock country in Central Europe. Its size reaches 93 030 km² with a population of nearly 10 million people.
Hungarian, the official language, is the world’s most widely spoken Uralic language.
The territory of present-day Hungary has for centuries been a crossroads for various peoples, including Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs and the Avars
The colors are the same as the traditional coat of arms of Hungary. It is said that the white color symbolizes the rivers of Hungary, the green color symbolizes the mountains, and the red symbolizes the blood flowing in many wars.
Budapest has the highest number of thermal springs in the world. There are more than 1500 thermal baths and spas in Hungary, but the capital takes the prize when it comes to the number of thermal springs. 70 million liters of thermal water rise to the surface of the earth daily. Hungary has public bathing practices that go back to Roman times.
Hungary has itsown cowboys. They are called ‘csikós’. They live and entertain the visitors with amazing horse shows on the Hungarian Great Plain called the ‘Puszta‘.
Budapest was almost named Pestbuda. Budapest was born when three cities, Buda, Pest and Óbuda (Old Buda) were united, and at first the founders had different ideas about what they should name the new city.
What to expect?
Language: The official language is Hungarian but English is widely spoken, especially in the capital. In the country side it could be a bit restricted but should be fine.
Food: As most of the country around the Balkan, the traditional dish is the goulash. And while meat became popular recently, you can still fine some alternatives.
Transportation: Buses is certainly the most commun mean of transportation in Hungary and you can get around with it easily if you have time. If you prefer a quicker way, there is also some main railway line..
Money: The currency in Hungary is the Euro. Most places accept credit card and many ATM can be found around.
Plugs: The plugs in Hungary are type C and F like all the UE. The standard voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50hz.
Safety: Hungaryis a pretty safe country for all type of travellers. You may want to be careful about pickpocket in big cities and avoid getting out after dark, but that’s quite the same in most places.
