Introduction: Ile aux Moines Travel

Ile au Moines is the biggest island of the Morbihan Golf, in the west of France, Brittany region. The island has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and dolmens can be found on it.

If you are looking for a nature escape with some secluded beach and wild nature, looking to bike around or even trail around the GR34 (Loop trail of the island), getting to Ile au moines for a day will be a great idea.

Getting there

The easiest way to get to Ile au Moines is by taking a 5min ferry from Port Blanc in Baden. Izenah croisieres is running daily departure to and from the island.

The ferry runs all year long, every 30min (every 15min in peak season):

  • October to March: de 7am to 7:30pm
  • April – May – June – September: 7am to 8pm
  • 1st July to 31 August: 7am to 10pm
  • Sunday and bank holidays: First boat at 8am, new year 9am.

One-way cost 5.5€ both ways, and you can buy the ticket the same day at Port Blanc before taking the ferry.

The best way to get to the ferry is by car. There is a parking in front of the port. P1 coast 9€ for 7h.

If not, there is a free shuttle from Baden, Bourg to Port Blanc.

Moving Around

There are no cars on Ile au Moines, the best way to move around is either walking along the island. If you like hiking, the GR34, is a 17km (4h30min) loop trail all around the island.

Or once out of the ferry, you can rent a bike on the island.

We personally opted to rent the bike from the shop on the right of the Tourism office. It cost 10€ for 5h or 12€ for the whole day. The bikes are in good shape and comfortable 😊

When to Visit

The best time to visit the island is Summer with July, August being the peak season. At this time, the weather will be hot and nice.

If not, Spring would be the second-best choice but all year round you can visit the island.

Where to Stay

If you want to have an even better experience and stay on the island, there is not many places to stay on the island:

But as the ferry takes only 5min, it is possible to stay nearby:

What to Eat

We would strongly recommend bringing you own picnic on the island. There is a couple of restaurants but only near the ports. There is a small supermarket in the city center.

Things to do Ile au Moines

Pointe du Trec'h

Visit the Pointe du Trec’h, enjoy the view of the old cross before walking down to the viewpoint.

Pointe de Brouel

East side of the island. From there you can see the Ile D’Arz.

Plage du Vran

Our favorite beach of the island. Be sure to get there at high tide and enjoy a splendid seclude beach away from the crowd.

Plage du Gored

Small beach on the west coast of the island.

Fontaine de Kerno

Small natural well.

Plage Le Rudel

Small beach on the west coast of the island.

Plage Pointe de Brannec

One of the top spots on the island. Stunning view, perfect place to relax under the tree and then relax in the water.

Dolmen Er Boglieux

Discover one of the old and mysterious Dolmen of the island.

Itinerary

You have to chose if you want to do the coastal trail or to rent a bike. You can’t do both in a single day and can’t go on the coastal trail with a bike.

We opted to rent a bike (we did not always follow the correct path)

  • 10am: Arrived on the island and rent a bike
  • Yellow circuit to Pointe du Trec’h
  • Red Circuit to Pointe de Brouel
  • Plage du Vran (Lunch and beginning of afternoon)
  • Plage du Gored (Just to see)
  • Fontaine de Kerno
  • Plage Le Rudel (Just to see)
  • Plage Pointe de Brannec for a break
  • Dolmen Er Boglieux
  • Return to the port and boat back at 3:30pm.
